I drilled with the Garand while in Army ROTC at San Jose State before losing my deferment ( SJSC was ranked the number one party school nationally the two years I was there unfortunately ). I have a very vague recollection of using .22 caliber rifles on the range at RTC San Diego during Navy boot camp later that year.

I never had to qualify with the M1 Garand, Sgt Tom Cunnally, but we spent a lot of time with breakdown, familiarization and cleaning of the M1 at the Weapons NCO Supervisor Candidate Special Forces Course at Fort Bragg, NC in 1970.

With that question we are really forced to show our true age. For me the obvious answer is yes, including boot camp I qualified 5 times with the M1 during my first enlistment. Qualifying with rousing match scores from 207 to 224. I did leave with an expert's badge which I was always extremely proud of.

I'm not quite that fossilized yet. My first qual was the M14 which I fell in love with. When I got into SM shooting, I did have a M1 in 7.62 that I used for the long prone shoots as you didn't have to deal with a magazine protrusion. Shorter shoots, the M1A was my go to. Never got into the mouse guns for SM. Both weapons were lovingly made up by the armorers at NWS Crane.

Yes, I had an M-1 in Basic. I had an M-2 Carbine later.
