Amazing. It also makes sense about the speed of a hailstone - I have caught those on my knuckles riding bike - it's like getting hit by ball-peen hammers.

Because of my understanding of Newtonian physics I never really wondered about the journey of raindrops. I was interested in the formation of clouds however and what prompted them to dispense with precipitation either as rain, freezing rain or snow.
On the other hand I was concerned about the impact of hail either on my head [sans helmet] or exposed things such as vehicles and livestock SSgt Alex Robinson

Not really. Pretty much straight shot from the clouds to the grass......unless the wind is blowing pretty good, then its more of an angle kind of rain.
