I'm a parent of two boys... reading about that girl, I wasn't sure if I should of been disgusted or laugh. She's 18 yrs old, there is no legal or even moral principle that obligates parents to pay for their kids college.

LCpl Lefler,

I understand your feelings.  However, I wonder whether we might not try to help pay for our children's college and perhaps even graduate school, if we are in financial position to do so?

In my generation, we felt an obligation to pay for college and perhaps even graduate school, so our children would have a better start in life and be able to become all they can be.

I am not suggesting children should sue their parents to force support for private high school, college, and graduate school.

We are not all the best possible parents.  God knows I made a great many mistakes.  But, in this instance, long before a case found itself into court, and even after the case was filed, the parents, and now the judge, should order family counseling.

This should be a family court matter, where a counseling order is routine pre-requisite; not litigation between parents and children.

Warmest Regards, Sandy

LT Annala, don't get me wrong, I'm all about helping my kids with college. I keep urging my ex wife to talk to me about our 12 yr olds college in a bunch of years cause I know the price is going to be horrific, but I'll do whatever I can for him to go to college. i just think for this girl to feel her parents should pay for her college to the point she wants to sue her parents for it is outrageous.

LT Annala,

I absolutely think it should be up the parents to decide whether or not to support their children into college (or beyond).  Some kids/people are not cut out to continue on in school - either because they are not motivated or have a desire to do something else.  Forcing or coercing kids into college could actually be counterproductive to both the educational and life goals of the child.  It can also put a significant strain on the parents.  For kids who WANT to go to college, there are ways to go that don't require it to be fully funded by the parents.  There are scholarships, grants, etc etc etc available for almost everyone to continue their education after high school.  Sometimes I feel like some generations have decided that the be all and end all of life is a college degree and that their children MUST go!

I'm a parent of 5 kids.  If my children have the desire and motivation to do good in high school and want to attend college, I am more than willing to help them.  But if they show no desire for that path, I'm not going to force or coerce it on them.

This case is a gross misuse of the legal system and should never have made it to any real court hearings.  It should have been tossed the first time a judge heard it.  This case is a waste of resources and the young lady should be made to pay for the courts time - through community service.
