Were you allowed to attend career fairs, job interviews? Did you just plain get treated differently, especially from leadership? That's it, that's the list.

I think it's also interesting to look back at the fact that the Army spends a lot of money to take someone from jeans to greens but spends pennies in comparison to take that same person from greens to jeans, not accounting for disability or other benefits we get from our service. Left to do odd tasks or deal with the problem kids, at least in my case. Oh yeah, and make the morning coffee! I also did the same thing that the retiring 1SG did with me. I left 6 months after getting back from a deployment. I had told them about three months in advance, so plenty of time for turn over. I was treated like I was a disease, and when they were trying to plan thins I would offer my input they just looked at me with the "why are you talking" expression then go back to their discussion. I was also told while I was deployed I would be receiving a "mid-tour" Commendation for all the work I did for the 3+ years I was there. That medal never matierilized, even though I either helped or on my own created 3 work centers that were mandated by higher HQ that never existed at that base. No farewell or anything, not even a good bye. The base did that to everyone that was leaving active duty. Retirees or personnel PCSing received all the bells and whistles. I felt like a whole service branch turned my back on me. Thankfully I have some friends, previous commanders and other mentors that I still talk to and support me. As a whole, I feel active duty does a non-retiree a disservice and leaves that person with a bad taste in my mouth, and I was not a trouble making NCO, I have an impeccable active duty record so they couldn't even play that card if they tried. Definitely a sore topic for me lol. And by no means try to give suggestions to the replacement about the troops and issues you may be aware of that can assist in any situation. Then they think you want to keep things as they were. Yes been there. Hard things is when you are still in the area, and your OLD troops are still asking you questions or for help and then you get shut down. I've left 3 jobs in that time and there was no luncheon, fanny-patting, or coddling. There are the same people in industry as there are in some military units who seem to take it personally when you decide to "leave the family" and move on toward new opportunities and experience. With that said, it is up to those of us who CAN ... to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.
