Counseling Packets... 5-6mo of consecutive no counselings. No SLRRT Counselings. Year old admin input ie ERBs etc. I make a memo assuming the date I filled the Team Leader Slot and typed up the intial counselings and had the SLRRTs ready to engage the Soldiers. Met the other Team Leader. A E5 promoted a month after myself. He consistently starts underminding my decisions with the soldiers and threatens them with negative counselings (that are never done) left and right for things I solved with a on the spot correction. He is never at work or PT. Dead man profile for the past 7 mo yet he sports the PT Badge when he is there and puts down the soldiers. I maintain a 300 and try my best to encourage the soldiers. The morale is the lowest I have seen in a squad let alone the platoon. I tried talking to him about it and he brushes it off. I talk to the squad leader and PSG but nothing is done. No support whatsoever. Ive been here a week and the guys are getting a little more motivated and the aura is great until this E5 comes around again usually the end of the day. From pv2 to PSG they refer to him as free paycheck... yet nothing is done to help his leadership skills? I am at a loss of words. I won't quit on those guys and I am trying to get this squad back up to speed but when another E5 is underminding my decisions and noone supports them. I feel infuriated these soldiers have been neglected as such. Any advice? It is greatly appreciatedDealing with toxic/unmotivated leadership in a new unit.2014-04-24T20:15:30-04:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member110366<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Just PCS'd to Fort Hood from Fort Riley. First, I'd talk to my team and encourage them to let me know if the other team leader says anything to them that contradicts anything that was put out by me. Secondly, since nothing was accomplished by talking to him or the PSG, you're going to have to lead by example with your team to show the rest of the squad what RIGHT looks like. If the rest of the platoon or unit doesn't notice the positive impact that you are making, then you keep on doing right and leading by EXAMPLE anyways. The intangible rewards of doing so will be what matters the most.Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 24 at 2014 8:40 PM2014-04-24T20:40:01-04:002014-04-24T20:40:01-04:00CPT Private RallyPoint Member110399<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>How is your platoon leader? You might get a chewing from your PSG for approaching the PL, but if it gets the situation taken care of, sometimes that's what it takes. Also, there are times when you're not aware of what all is going on in the background. The other NCO may actually be getting removed from the service. The story will unfold as you spend time in the platoon, a week isn't very long at all. What is the other team leader up to when he isn't there? What does he do all day? Why is he not getting called out by the rest of the platoon leadership?Response by CPT Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 24 at 2014 8:54 PM2014-04-24T20:54:11-04:002014-04-24T20:54:11-04:00CW2 Joseph Evans110650<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>He disappears all day and the Squad leader isn't stepping up. Step in, step up. <br />Either you'll motivate some others to actually do their jobs or they'll fade out because the jobs getting done. Either way, you win, the Soldiers win.<br />You may have to put up with his shenanigans for first and last formation, but that's a small price to pay if you got the rest of the squad dancing to your beat.<br /><br />You've only been there a week and you don't know what else is going on though and some things are probably about to change. If you've demonstrated good initiative, reliability and judgment, you should be fine.Response by CW2 Joseph Evans made Apr 24 at 2014 11:55 PM2014-04-24T23:55:55-04:002014-04-24T23:55:55-04:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member110825<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Considering that you've only been there for a week so far I would suggest just giving it some time because if you come at them the wrong way you risk alienating yourself with this new unit. Do what you can and always be the great leader that you know yourself to be and I'm sure things will change once they get to know you and you them.Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 25 at 2014 8:47 AM2014-04-25T08:47:46-04:002014-04-25T08:47:46-04:00SFC Douglas Eshenbaugh110873<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>One week is a really short time to make that quick of a determination on things and by the sounds of things you only have at most half the story. I would wager you PSG, SL heck even the platoon is still trying to feel you out. You need to keep engaging your fellow Team Leader and your Squad Leader. You might have to have a come to Jesus meeting with you, your battle and the SL but it shouldn't be on week two unless things are extremely hostile. If you think you need to do that make sure you go prepared. You need to be taking notes during the day of what you see that is good and what you see that needs to be improved and what you think the way ahead is for those improvements. Still you need to work with that other Team Leader more before escalating it.Response by SFC Douglas Eshenbaugh made Apr 25 at 2014 9:36 AM2014-04-25T09:36:57-04:002014-04-25T09:36:57-04:001SG Eric Rice110903<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>You have taken the first step to initiate change already from what you have stated in the forum. It is important that you continue to do what is right. Always be an engaged leader and do not do anything that will not let you sleep peacefully at night. Even though you are the "New Guy" you can influence change by demonstrating what right looks like. Sometimes when faced with toxic leadership situations you must be the beacon of light for others to emulate to include peers, junior soldiers, as well as senior leadership in the organization. As long as you do what is right by the Soldiers most everything else will fall into place. If it does not then utilize the Chain of Command to voice your concerns through the Open Door Policy. Everyone has a boss. Just make sure that give your immediate supervisor/leadership the opportunity to address your concerns? Good luck in your journey to make things right.Response by 1SG Eric Rice made Apr 25 at 2014 10:15 AM2014-04-25T10:15:52-04:002014-04-25T10:15:52-04:00WO1 Private RallyPoint Member111932<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>What Squadron are you in?Response by WO1 Private RallyPoint Member made Apr 26 at 2014 11:08 AM2014-04-26T11:08:40-04:002014-04-26T11:08:40-04:00MSG Private RallyPoint Member122024<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>All great information posted above.
