CPO selectee from USS GERALD R FORD passed away during exercise. Should he be promoted posthumously?

This is a very tragic incident. My thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends. I think the Navy is going to do the right thing and promote him to CPO.

Wow! Talk about bad news. Of course he should be promoted. His family deserve to see the Navy do right by them. He would be a Chief today if he lived. The only real question is what compensation they will see. Hopefully he left them prepared financially. Very sad for them and his unit...

I don't know how the Navy handles these types of things, but the Army would go through with promoting a Soldier in this situation. I think it is the right thing to do.

You have to understand that Navy rank comes in two parts. The first part is "frocking" - you make the rank and they give you the stripe. And the title. And the workload. But NOT the money. So he is already a "Chief" as he was a selectee. However, several months later is when the money kicks in (the second part). Now...my name title is "PO3"...what if I told you I passed the E-5 test prior to being medically retired? Oooops. Looks like the Navy didn't fork over the cash... More than likely they won't fork over the cash for the dead Chief either. They'll gladly call him "Chief" but thats about it. Unless things have changed since I retired.
