In the earliest days of the Republic the standards for Freedom and Equality were very ... iffy ... due to the necessity to induce all thirteen colonies to join together in a fight for Independence. Without that unity, the current Independence we enjoy (245 years this week, as I type at the end of June, 2021) might well have never happened. Since then, the Trajectory of Freedom and Equality in the US has generally gone in one direction; that direction is towards more inclusivity. While US history includes fits and starts, the overall Trajectory has to be considered inexorable.
