What will my role be in research as a 72D? Does it narrow down when you get to your duty station?

So I applied through AMEDD and recently got selected for 72D (Environmental Engineer/Environmental Officer). I am in the process of taking the position, but I am unclear exactly what they do. I have read through everything I can find but it is very generic. Their job description is broad:

"you’ll identify and evaluate potential health risks and develop a course of action to control or prevent disease, illness, and injury. You’ll supervise the scientific research for environmental health and industrial hygiene, assess weapons, equipment, clothing, and material systems, and develop policies, programs, and operations to ensure the health and safety of Soldiers and staff."

I have a strong science and research background so I am more curious what my role will be in the research. As being a part of AMEDD are they under Army Public Health Center? Does it narrow down when you get to your duty station? I am prior service (navy), so I was trying to understand what the day to day would be like. Any insight would be great. Thanks.

And --> if/when moving on to the civilian field, EHS (environmental, health and safety) smarts and the related certifications virtually guarantees a six figure (plus benefits) employment package. Unless you get assigned to an element of US Army Public Health Command (located at JBLM, Landstuhl, JBSA, Ft Meade, and Camp Zama) to do R&D, you'll more likely be assigned to a Preventive Medicine Detachment or on a BN staff in the Force Health Protection section. You'll assist and advise the Commander on Health and Safety to prevent/reduce DNBI. In essence you will be the Health Inspector and OSHA Safety. If you'd like to know more, please send me a DM and I'll answer questions s as best I can. I can also point you in the direction of the 72Ds I know.

I am also prior Navy and now a 72D. So, out of the gate you could potentially go to the Army Public Health Center (which would be nice) and be a project officer and learn some environmental health things and get tasked out to go do those things. Most likely you will end up at a brigade combat team and teach field sanitation (environmental health) and maybe food handlers courses. You can get pulled into a lot of stuff OR you can do little to nothing in your field. But overall you can end up at a hospital, prevmed detachment, public health center, research unit, special forces group, etc There are a lot of opportunities.. but you will have to "embrace the suck" from time to time.
