I was shocked to read this on the cover... Fort McClellan&#39;s Toxic Legacy. I was stationed at Ft. McClellan in 1973 for basic training. It was a complete surprise to me to read the article entitled &quot; The Long Shadow of Fort McClellan&quot; by author, Ken Olsen. I have presented to the VA Medical Center for years with issues some of which are autoimmune in nature, others unexplained. Never once did a doctor ask where I was stationed or if I might have been exposed to something dangerous. Are any of my health issues related to my time there? I do not know. I would like to have been informed that toxic chemicals were used there and that problems may exist for service members. It&#39;s very disheartening to read about this so many years later. Response by SPC Karen Zaorski made May 13 at 2019 7:26 PM 2019-05-13T19:26:48-04:00 2019-05-13T19:26:48-04:00 CPT Tommy Curtis 4633341 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I worked right next to all of the fenced in areas where they dumped mustard agents and a lot more. Our smoke generator even used water from a spring next to the building. I started getting sick after being there a year. It kept getting worse after I left there. I left the Army in 93 and was diagnosed with RA in 94. Even though the flares started on active duty, the VA has refused to even acknowledge the connection. The last time I filed a claim for they wrote that they would not consider future claims for the same thing, even though I provided some evidence I had found online. I&#39;m at 100%, but I would still lkke them to admit what we were exposed to. There are lots of people who have developed autoimmune diseases after working there.
