Canada is retiring its last Destroyer due to rust and no replacement for 6 years. Should we sell the Canadian Navy 2 of our Frigates to help?

The Proud Canadian Navy is wearing out. They lost two supply ships recently (one to a fire and the other rusted through) and both had to be retired. Now their last Destroyer is also rusting out. Their Navy Brass says it will take 6 years for a replacement. The Canadians have not asked us for any help but they should. Canada does help NATO with patrols in the Black Sea. They need the ships that we have.

Do we happen to have two destroyers that are currently just sitting around unmanned and unused? If any are just sitting around in a mothball status I suppose something akin to the old Lend/Lease act could be considered, but I don't think we are that deep into a second Cold War to merit it.

The reality is that Canada has no incentive to build up their Navy. Why? Because we will never let anything happen to them. They're content to let us bear the burden of their protection. They spend a lot of time talking about their vaunted 'free' medical and education, but the only reason they can afford those things is because they don't have to spend a significant portion of their GDP on defense...because they know WE will protect them. I don't have a problem with this. I DO have a problem with them failing to acknowledge it. And I say this as someone who lived in Halifax for 2 years.

Isn't this exactly what Trump is talking sbout when he say NATO partners need to pay their share? Their new PM is so far left he almost meets himself coming! They spend on social giveaways but not their Navy. They just announced they are cancelling the F-35. And why not America will provide... The only good news for Canada is they don't cross the boarder in great numbers ... Yet.

If they want them, they know how to get them from us through the FMS program. As far as giving them one, if they asked, I am sure we would provide.

Rusted through?!
How much do you have to neglect maintenance in order for that to happen? Years? A Decade?
Obviously Canada has decided that their Navy is not a national priority.

Not to channel Donald Trump, but I am pretty certain NATO has specific treaty requirements outlining each nation's commitment to national and alliance defense.

I would say this is an opportunity to have a joint ship exercise, Canadian and American Sailors operate on the same ship(s). Conducting whatever mission they would have used of their Destroyer. Could be a valuable learning and training experience.

NG and Canadian Army are already doing joint exercises, might as well throw Navy into the mix.

Canada has been an ardent supporter of our efforts in Afghanistan. If they need some help we should certainly lend a hand. We shouldn't supply their WHOLE Navy for them, but a couple ships would probably help them out and strengthen ties with an already good friend.

As I understand it, we are getting ready to retire our Spruance class destroyers. We usually retire ours when they still have a lot of life left in them, and sell many of them to foreign navies. I'm sure we can arrange a sale/transfer of an old Spruance class ship to our next door neighbors the same as we might sell to the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, or any of the other nations we have sold ships to.
