They lost two supply ships recently (one to a fire and the other rusted through) and both had to be retired. Now their last Destroyer is also rusting out. Their Navy Brass says it will take 6 years for a replacement. The Canadians have not asked us for any help but they should. Canada does help NATO with patrols in the Black Sea. If any are just sitting around in a mothball status I suppose something akin to the old Lend/Lease act could be considered, but I don't think we are that deep into a second Cold War to merit it. Why? Because we will never let anything happen to them. They're content to let us bear the burden of their protection. They spend a lot of time talking about their vaunted 'free' medical and education, but the only reason they can afford those things is because they don't have to spend a significant portion of their GDP on defense...because they know WE will protect them. I don't have a problem with this. I DO have a problem with them failing to acknowledge it. And I say this as someone who lived in Halifax for 2 years. Conducting whatever mission they would have used of their Destroyer. We usually retire ours when they still have a lot of life left in them, and sell many of them to foreign navies. I'm sure we can arrange a sale/transfer of an old Spruance class ship to our next door neighbors the same as we might sell to the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, or any of the other nations we have sold ships to.
