I began watching lots of Japanese television programming while stationed in Hawaii. There were no subtitles, so a group of us would sit in the day room at the BOQ making up dialog. It was a hoot. Then they began adding subtitles and we discovered that we weren't that far off. However, seriously, I've watched some of my favorite movies in foreign language with subtitles without any great difficulty. Enjoyed them immensely.

On a slightly different note, one of my suppliers had a Chinese crew that watched Chinese programming during lunch breaks and I was surprised to find subtitles even though the actors were speaking Chinese. When I asked, they told me "the actors speak terrible Chinese". Actually, the problem is that there are so many dialects/variations of Chinese, that few understand them all. Indians overcome this by having everyone speak a national language (Hindi) as well as their "native language". Interesting, yes?

Occasionally my wife does not like looking at the Thai subtitles although she speaks very good English.

I watched movies filmed in English with Japanese substitued ant then English subtitles.

About drove me nuts, but, it was all we had.

Oh wait, Maybe that is why I am the way I am?

I think most of the good movies produced nowadays are foreign movies. Subtitles don't bother me.

sometimes I watch Arabic Youtube shows without subtitles. And although I can only translate a few words here and there I get the general gist of the show.

I can but it annoys me. I was okay with Passion of the Christ because it fit the setting and you don't really need to see the translation to know what's going on, at least not if you already know the story of Jesus.

On the other hand the movie Inglorious Bastards annoyed the crap out of me because I felt that even though again it fit the setting it seemed like I was spending more time trying to keep reading the subtitles than actually watching and understanding the plot of the movie. Watching it later it made sense and it wasn't quite as bad but still, you start missing too much of the film itself to justify it.

I prefer to watch films in their original language with English subtitles. Even if the movie is in English, I will always have subs on in case I didn't catch something (due to accents, quick speaking, etc).

I watch a fair number of foreign language films. Troll Hunter is my favorite. Most recently I was preparing for Star Wars, and watched Seven Samurai as it was one of George Lucas' inspirations for Star Wars.

SGT Private RallyPoint Member It is really not that different than watching an English show with subtitles for the deaf. Sometimes it actually helps to get a clearer picture of what is being watched.

I watch everything with subtitles turned on anyway so watching english subtitled foreign films is a non-issue for me. There are some great movies out there that were just never dubbed in english.

I prefer subtitles over dubbing because with dubbing the words and the actors' mouths never match up.

Yes. I just finished watching a great 6 part mini series on Netflix called "The Heavy Water War". It was about the British American and Norwegian attempts at destroying the Norse Hydro Heavy Water facility that was supplying the Nazi scientists with the Heavy Water used in the Nazi nuclear weapons research program. It was subtitled in English, but the dialog of the series was in the actual native language of each of the participants. The Nazi's spoke actual German, the Brits and Americans spoke English, and the Norwegians spoke Norwegian.

When I went to Korea the first time I started watching Korean Comedies. Some of them were a lot funnier than American ones. I have to watch them with subtitles though. I don’t think watching any foreign movie that has been dubbed would sound right or get the right tone. I do hate having to read over time when I was watching some Anime shows.

It is a good way to watch a known film dubbed in a foreign language.
