There is plenty of ways to show professional, spiritual and personal growth, all while serving in a position that can't offer or provide you win advancement at the moment. There was virtually no promotion for commissioned officers in that period. It wasn't unusual to serve 20 more years and retire as a Captain in the Army. Men like Eisenhower and McArthur languished in Washington. The most exciting thing they did was kick out the "Bonus Army" during the depression. There was definitely a place for the "Ring Knockers" no matter the grade.
