I just joined the national guard and looking into either transferring units or switching the the air guard. Reason for wanting to switch is they haven’t provided lodging nor travel pay and the base is 6hrs from my house is there a way to transfer

In order to switch, your current unit would have to release you. Since you just joined, your unit is not likely to release you to go to another unit. My question is: why did you join a guard unit that is 6 hours from your HOR?

Wouldn't he just need to get a release if he went to the Air Guard? I don't remember it being much of an ordeal to transfer to another Guard unit in the state and as S1, I would have been doing the paper work.

CPT Lawrence Cable - his CO is going to have to approve any transfer. As long as the CO approves and signs the DD 368, it's not an ordeal. But I don't know many CO's who would be willing to release a guy that just got to the unit unless he was a real shitbag.

If I haven’t even received uniforms or any school dates do you think it would be easier to transfer

Sgt Francisco Sarabia - so haven't been to reclass school and not attended your first drill? That makes a difference. If you've just driven to the unit on a couple of occasions for an hour or so, then that doesn't qualify you for travel pay or lodging for those trips unless you were on some kind of orders. if you got paid for that time, they probably did a 1380 and used RMA or some other special funding to do so. If you have been to a drill weekend and didn't get lodging or travel pay, that's different. Sounds like they haven't invested many resources in you yet so they'd likely be more willing to release you.

It's kind of crazy that you selected a slot that was six hours away. You can definitely switch units to a closer one that has a slot for you in your rank and MOS. You can also reclass into a Will Train slot at a closer location but there may be additional requirements and stipulations associated with that if you've already attended AIT or received a bonus.
There is a program and funding for your travel thst others on here explain.
Switching branches would require you to separate from your current branch and then apply to another.

I chose the unit because of what the recruiter and supposedly the s1 at that unit said they said I’d be able to rate travel pay so far I’ve gone up there twice for the day they said they needed me there I was there both times for maybe 1 hr I have yet to receive a rundown of how pay works at that unit or anything I talked to the s1 guy then got attitude saying don’t text me every day about the pay stuff so already tired of the unit

Sgt Francisco Sarabia - sounds like you made a couple of volunteer trips to the unit and didn't get paid. IF that is the case, you're not going to rate travel pay or lodging for those trips.

It was for paperwork and uniforms but the people who were supposed to be there didn’t go in so it was a waste all three times I called to make sure to call all sources seeing if it was mandatory and all times they said yes

Travel for home station drill is authorized, it is not funded in most of the Army Guard, and I have not seen it funded in the Air Guard in CA.
It is fully funded just about everywhere in the Army Reserves.
