Can anyone provide current info for housing on/around DLI (Monterey, CA)?

I am reporting to DLI in june and am starting to look into housing. Do they charge full BAH for on-post housing, or a prorated amount? What are the best neighborhoods for off post housing? I'll post more questions as they come to me.

Full BAH for “on post” which is actually about 15-20 from DLI at Fort Ord. Although, you are allowed to find alternative housing. Good luck finding something within the BAH allowance closer than 20 minutes away though. On the DLI website there’s the number for housing, who could give you all the specifics for onpost.

99% of the time On-Post housing = your entire BAH

Single or family? DLI is different. ‘On-post’ housing is about 20 minutes away, and traffic can actually be lousy. The Presidio is perched at the top of a hill with only a few gates in or out.

Pacific grove is a good option. Close to school, not outrageously priced. But anywhere you go, expect to spend most, if not all, of your BAH.

Are going to be a student or staff/cadre? When you say ‘best neighborhood’, do you mean for schools or to save money? In general, Monterey is expensive and all military housing is privatization so they take all the BAH. The actual DLI is a small post with only 37 homes for Key and Essential staff. Otherwise, you can apply for La Mesa or Ord Military Community. Both are operated by The Parks at Monterey Bay. I can offer more info but I need more specific questions.

I retired out of POM recently and decided to stay in the area, I purchased a modest starter home for $470,000 in 09, an equivalent home now will go for 600K. Very very expensive area. $3.50 a gallon for gas. There is a commissary on post and AAFES so that helps. Monterey, Marina, Seaside OMC are all becoming bedroom communities for silicon valley (Googlers). http://www.parksatmonterey.com/floor-plans.asp?AID=28698&Neighborhood=Fitch%20Park . 1800 sq feet with a small yard is standard for E6 on post. On the economy, a place with a yard for a pet will be about 1100 sq feet and $2500 a month so take that into your financial planning.
