Can anyone help me learn more about nightlife, culture, and housing in Orlando,Florida?

I am moving to the Orlando,Florida area in April and was wondering what can I expect in terms of nightlife, culture, housing?

I would stay in Orlando when I was in Florida to see Space Shuttle launches. You can expect hot, humid weather with frequent showers during the summer months. Florida also is hit by hurricanes and tropical storms. The Orlando traffic can be bad because of all the tourists in town for Disney World, Epcot Center, and the other attractions.

I grew up a few hours southwest of there on the Bradenton/Anna Maria Island border. The humidity is awful and traffic sucks during snowbird season and during the summer when tourists want to visit all of the big theme parks. You can also expect it to rain every day on the left side of the street at 1500, haha. You'll find out that Floridians love Publix - it's the best grocery store in the states. Amazing subs and cookies, quality food, and super friendly workers.

We lived in Alafaya Woods, a Subdivision in Oviedo, a rural becoming suburban part of Seminole County. It wasn't near any of the fun stuff, but it was affordable, and a great place to live...

I grew up in Brevard county just a bit south east of central Florida. I attended the University of Central Florida and lived in Orlando from 2003-2011.

Housing: avoid UCF area and Metro West. Metro West Looks nice, but its not far from the jail and crime was prevelant in that area. Nice areas: Oviedo (lived there loved it, close to UCF but nicer and far from the tourist stuff), East Orlando (as long as its not right by the College), Thornton Park, Winter Park, Down Town. Whereever you live, make sure I4 isnt your main commute, its always crazy busy.

If you are looking to get a house somewhere give my Friend Lindsay a call [login to see] , she specializes with the VA loan stuff too, or might be able to point you in the right direction.

As for night life, lots of clubs and bars all around. Depends on what you like and its ever evolving.

Be prepared for the heat. I grew up there so the humidty doesn't bother me much. You are only about 40 mins from Cocoa Beach.

Had to move the date up to January 1-HAPPY NEW YEAR to me. I think I have an apartment, but trying to find everything else and nervous about the move so IF anyone can give ideas, I'd be thankful

I'd say nightlife and culture in Orlando is rather diverse and has something for most interests. The local weekly newspaper (Orlando Weekly) is available free at many businesses and is available online at http://www.orlandoweekly.com . It's a great source for local events.

Moved ALOT earlier than planned and thanks to everyone that told me about Orlando, cause the intel was spot on. THe move is just what the 'Doc' ordered and I could not be any happier.
