This seems really inconvenient, especially if we will have to move once I get pinned. Haven't been to SLC yet. Is there anyway around this? Can an E6 promotable get E7 housing? 2019-02-06T15:58:06-05:00 SFC Private RallyPoint Member 4346666

I'm being told from housing at my next assignment that even though I'll be promoted probably within the next six months that I still have to take E6 housing. The way they're all independently operated leaves you with little to no choice but getting the runaround. If it's privatized, the answer is whatever is stated in the contract. The other thing is even if there is E7 housing, no units may be available when you show up. This is one of those "results will vary" situations. It flips the other way as well. I remember staying in E-7 quarters as an O-5. Glad to have a roof over my head. Sometimes the grade demographics are way different than the housing scheme laid out 20-30 years prior. I also PCSed as a promotable E6. Now that I am E7 I am on the waiting list but I am basically at the bottom and every time someone is added I get moved down so I may never get E7 and up housing.

Which really sucks cause it is a lot better than the current housing I am in.

But the housing I am in now is not bad. When I was a brand new Major, assigned to Maxwell AFB, I was given E6 housing. Now, I of course did have the option to live off base (but I was only there for 10 months for ILE), and the housing office did adjust the cost of the housing since it was "substandard" (I am sure you have heard USAF members use this term before!), but just know that they will offer housing below your current (or future) rank to you, me, and everyone else--no matter where you PCS to--for the rest of your career. Smile, and make the best of it if you are willing/able to do so. I was a SSG (P) at the time and they offered me housing in the senior NCO area. At the time, which has been a few years so things could have changed was that a SFC had to have a three bedroom house. I was a SSG stationed at Huachuca and I was able to get into the Bonnie Blink area, which at the time was senior NCO housing. I made SFC shortly after moving up there, but at the time I was only a SSG.
