Can a soldier wear civilian clothing to do pt?

Just was wondering if my boyfriend can wear civilian clothes to do pt in?

As far as I know if he is doing PT on his own, yes he can. If he is doing any kind of PT that is organizational or with his command or unit, then no. I'm assuming that he is not in the middle of any school or training schedule that would require some kind of uniform.

Yes. No. Maybe. It depends. Ask the Chain of Command.
99% of the time, if he is doing organized (unit) PT there will be a prescribed uniform (PTs most days, combat uniform for ruck marches, "battle focused" PT, and things like obstacle courses). 99% of the time if he is doing PT on his own (going for a weekend jog), he can wear whatever the heck he wants, as long as he doesn't violate uniform regs (AR 670-1 for Army, not sure what branch / unit your BF is in).

Depends on the context. If you are asking if he can workout by himself in civilian gym clothes than the answer is yes. But if it’s Unit PT it depends on the what is designated as the PT uniform of the day. Some units only PT in the standard PT uniform while others will allow civilian pt gear also referred to as rainbow gear. Like I said, it depends on the specific context and situation.

During your boyfriend's off time...yes he can wear civvies when doing PRT. When doing PRT with the unit, he will wear the uniform dictated by the 1SG and Training Schedule.

Trish Stepanski When I was on active duty, I often did PT in civilians when not doing orginized PT. As everyone has stated when doing organized PT he will ware the APFU. If he goes to a NCOES school, he will also wear the APFU.

Let us ask a few questions to place this in a fuller context:

Is he a Delayed Enlistment Member of the Guard or Reserve who has been issued 1 uniform for use on drill weekend before attending Basic? if so yes he can wear civilian PTs while training with the unit.

Is he Active Duty in a special duty status, or function, that requires civilian clothing to be worn? Yes, he may wear the APFT, but it may be optional based upon location of assignment.

Is he re-entering the service in either the National Guard, or Reserves after a separation of a few years? See above for Delayed Entry, once he is provided new issue or a clothing check he will be required to be in the current APFU.

Commonly, unless the Company/Battery/Troop Commander Authorizes it at the lowest level for a Family Day Event, or similar Relaxed Uniform Event, all Soldiers are required to be in the properly prescribed uniform based upon Policies, Training, and Duty Schedules.
