So, I am kicking around retirement options as I am currently at 29yrs and am on the fence about getting to let alone going past 30yrs. If an ARNG officer retires from the ARNG and becomes a "gray area" retiree is is still possible for them to return to the ARNG or Army Reserve as an officer and under what circumstances?

I'd try the "call to duty" in order to get your time. you will only know if you ask and apply here

Sir, did you ever get an answer? I spent the last 7yrs of my Reserve career as an IMA in a joint readiness unit OCONUS and received my 20yr Letter (24yrs of service) in 2012 and opted for the Grey Area (even considered a complete discharge). Wondering if one can leave the Grey Area back to the IRR. Not so interested in a Guard TPU but still willing to serve.

The USAR is hurting for command officers at the moment, Sir. I'm sure they would be happy to give you a home!
