Do you know about the Navy Enlisted Prize Essay Contest?

The Challenge: Write on a topic that makes the Naval Profession stronger. No subject is too large or too small.
Prizes: First Prize: $3,000; Second Prize: $2,000; Third Prize: $1,000
Note: This contest will run twice annually -- total prizes of $12,000 per year.

How about someone write about how the Constitution has been relegated to the scrapheap by the current administration and castrated by previous administrations and how it must be brought to the forefront and enforced if we are to once again regain the glory this nation and it's armed forces once had?

I think that would be a very good topic, but would probably be shot down by those higher up in power...

Wait, so Veterans can't participate unless they are retired? It seems like anyone who received an honorable discharge should be able to participate. At first I was interested, but it seems like Honoranle Vets should be included too.

Write a 1500 word Essay for 3000. Wow, that's 2 bucks a word! And who will get the glory for the ideas that get implemented? Not the writer it will simply be a spring board for "someone" to jump on and run with the idea(s). "to piggy back off of such and such here's my two sense" awards for "someone" to follow for their grand "spring board" ideas.

Just a follow up on this thread I did reach out to the Naval Institute with the following message and once I hear something back I will post the response:

Good Afternoon,

I have been asked by a few Navy veterans if the eligibility requirements could include honorable U.S. Navy vets as well. Some felt their service was being lessened since active, reserve and retired enlisted military (from all Navies) could submit something but not our own honorable vets. Thank you for your time!

Forgive me because I am on the phone app but I received the following response to my E-Mail inquiry:

Petty Officer Purcell,
The Enlisted Prize Essay Contest is restricted to enlisted person who are on active duty, in the Reserves, or retired. The intent is to incentivize these professionals to write for publication and win the prizes in this contest.
There is no intention to slight anyone who has served but does not fall in one of these three categories. We have a number of other contests—e.g., the General Prize Essay Contest—that veterans can and are encouraged to enter.
Please do not hesitate to call me if you would like to discuss further. Or, please encourage the Navy veterans who talked to you to call if they wish.

What is the criteria of the essay? Is it technical, is it about political correctness or free-spirited relevant item purely involving the U.S. Navy?
