California tells for-profit chain to stop enrolling veterans. What are your thoughts?

An agency within the department that sanctions training programs to serve veterans issued a suspension notice on Friday to ITT Educational Services, which operates schools in 39 states under the names ITT Technical Institute and Daniel Webster College.

Once again we have a potential situation where a for profit institute of higher learning appears to be taking advantage of veteran good will and education dollars. Hard to believe everything as first reported, but veterans deserve to use every G. I. Bill dollar they earn, and not to get ripped off.

The article didn't really say much to as why. I read the target demographic statement in the picture so that might have to do with something. I'd like to have a follow up on this story for sure!

I think this is an attempt to watch out for vets and our tax dollars spent on the GI Bills in all their forms

From what I have heard ITT and it's parent companies are nationally accredited which is less favorable than regional accreditation. Also ITT (in small print) warns that many accredited "brick and mortar" colleges & universities will not accept many or all credits from ITT programs if a student transfers. A good post on on-line degrees was posted a few weeks back that discusses ITT and other on-line, for profit colleges. Bottom line, READ EVERYTHING, CHECK OUT EVERYTHING before enrolling. If pursuing your first degree as an on-line degree, read and check everything 3 times and see where degrees from your selected on-line college/university are accepted.

Should I take classes at a school that isn’t regionally accredited?

Normally we wouldn’t tackle this sometimes prickly question in a public forum, but we’ve been seeing more applications from students who took course credits at schools without regional accreditation. In many of these situations, those credits don’t transfer to EWU.
