As long as they did their job and had my back (as well as his fellow Airmen), who he/she chose to be with was their God-given right. I knew quite a few people during my service who were gay, but because of the politics then could not openly express it. All of them were good people and I still talk to one whom I served with at my last duty station. I'm glad you had a change of heart and recognized this Airman for his accomplishments in service and not how he lived his personal life. "Sergeant, I'm gay", my response was "cool, as long as you continue to give me the same effort in work, and congratulations". I know this was a tremendous step for gays and lesbians, and personally it never bothered me which side of the fence they are on. I am secure in my sexuality, and think that the people that are insecure are the ones getting offended. Just my 2 cents. I did work with people that certainly were gay but it didn't affect Me in any way and I just didn't find it worth worrying about and had nothing to do with their character and dedication to the job We all had to accomplish and did.
