He has certainly never ran short of hurdles throughout his life and his career, so why does everyone continue to underestimate him in the Presidential race. He has now surged ahead of DT in Iowa, is tying him for 1st nationally, has polled in the top 3 for over a year, has quite possibly the largest grassroots campaign of all of the candidates and even out-raised even the RNC in the month of September (as well as every other candidate). Yet, the media continues to blow it off and exaggerate the success of their favorite billionaire tycoon. So, what's the deal? A lot. I most certainly would vote for him in preference to any of the Democratic or Third Party choices. I am convinced that he is one of the two smartest candidates in the race (although intelligence has never been an important attribute in a President). He's smart enough to have learned a lot about world affairs and political processes in the past few months to have overcome his deficits in those arenas. I have but two concerns with Dr. Carson as a President: First his lack of executive experience. I had occasion during my career as an IT consultant to work with medical establishments including the Department of Health for the County of Los Angeles and discovered that medical practitioners aren't necessary the best organized leaders. Of course, my generalization may not apply to Dr. Carson but it's still an issue with me. The other concern is that he doesn't appear Presidential to me. He is very deliberate in his speech and the effect is a halting delivery (that comedians have been quick to jump on). My father, a very bright man, also spoke in a measured pace and some might have been fooled into thinking him "slow". That being said, for those of us in the military who have led or been led, we are sensitive to the appearances of leadership and Dr. Carson doesn't appear like a leader. Think of the best leaders and you will find generally that they are also very adept communicators. Think of Winston Churchill as a supreme example of the art. Listen to recordings of FDR's fireside chats during which he braced the nation for the tasks before them in struggling through the Great Depression and WWII. Think of JFK's stirring speeches, especially the one wherein he challenged us to send a man to the moon and return him safely to earth. Think of President Reagan demanding "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall." Now imagine Dr. Carson making any of those speeches. I can't see it. Can you? Sometimes a President's, a leader's, greatest moments are calls to action. Whomever takes the reins of government in 2017 will have to truly inspired Americans to make a great effort to overcome the malaise in which we wallow today. Can you see Dr. Carson making that call effectively? Because; 1) He has no experience that has prepared him to be in a position so varied in scope, especially in foreign affairs, the area the President is solely responsible for leading; 2) his recent comments are evidence of his ignorance of government matters and basic procedures as well as his inability to communicate, a necessary quality for a president. His is almost similar to the Obama 2008 campaign - a lack of experience or cohesive message and an over reliance on a handful of sound bites which the more they are repeated the more his limits are exposed. <br />I really like him too and believe him to truly want the best for America, a stark contrast from Obama. To his credit, I think he's smart enough to surround himself with good advisors, another huge difference from Obama. But in these days of instant communication where every mistake and slip is widely known and severely scrutinized, I don't think that's enough.
