Everything is made up and the points don't matter. So you have to make 20 good years minimum. That is usually a combination of active days, inactive drills, correspondence courses, etc. So the magic number is 50 in your Anniversary Year. Extra points mean more in your monthly direct deposit when you turn 60. BTW NEVER RESIGN once you hit 20 or better. That freezes your benefit at the rate that day. Instead transfer to the Retired Reserve, Fleet Reserve, or equivalents. Yes they can recall you between then and 60 but the odds are very very low and if they do, you'd likely want to do it anyways because it's that bad. Your retired pay will be based on the pay scale at age 60. I wound up with around 5500 points so piling on the points makes a difference. CAPT Kevin B. Has been 9 years since I was in Air Guard so point amounts maybe off but 60 is a good year unless it changed since 07.

A good year only applies to Guard and Reserves as you can miss drills and not have enough points to meet good year status. Without that it doesn't count as a good year. In other words if you can earn 100 points but 70 is the minimum, be sure to get your 70 each year. The more points you have the more retirement pay you will receive at the age of 60. If you are/were deployed in a combat zone, your retirement pay will be sooner, for example you get deployed to Afghanistan for a year, then you'll start receiving your retirement at 59 and so on. If you do 20 years of active duty you will receive 50% of your base pay, reservists /national guard are calculated on how many points you acquire. Hope this helps. You where required to have 20 good years before retiring if you wanted to collect at age 60. Active duty gives you more points and more point equals a larger retirement. More rank also increases your retirement. Title ten order allows you to subtract amount of time on orders from age 60 and allows you to collect sooner than age 60. I retired yesterday with 24 years of total service and 5800 points. That was 9 years active and the rest as a Selective Reservist. I was mobilized in 2011 for 41 months and due to NDAA 2008 I am able to use the Active duty time to draw my pension earlier. Reservists retire in a status known as Retired without pay "Grey area" and typically at age 60 begin drawing their pension, And healthcare benefits. The provision of NDAA 2008 allows that for every 90 days of cumulative active duty to be 90 days early that you can draw for pay from age 60. For me that means that I will begin receiving payments at 56 1/2. Hope that helps explain it a little more clearly.
