Balancing the Federal budget, it worked in the 90's why not now?

How did President Clinton balance the budget in the 90's. Did he not have a divided house as well? Why are there so many problems today? What are YOUR solutions?

SFC Drake, from the dollars and cents angle, he balanced the budget by gutting the military. We actually had some fat back then, so it didn't hurt quite as bad as it will hurt now. Clinton had a divided Congress, but he wasn't afraid to reach across the aisle to the political opposition. I may not agree with all of his politics or his integrity, but I will give him that.

I hate to say this, but, the IRS fails to see the simple solution. Very simply put enact a flat tax across the board with no loopholes for the ultra-rich to slip through the cracks. This would make it fair for everyone. I may only make $900 a month but I would pay a flat tax. The problem here is that there would essentially eliminate refunds. On the flip side of this coin is that the money collected should or could be used to bring down the national debt.

I now step down from my soap box after once again sending out my .02.

With the economy still dragging, balancing the budget/cutting spending should not be the focus right now. Republican demands for austerity have slowed this recovery dramatically.
