I stopped wearing my ID Tags when I left the Army after 34 years SPC David Glines. I still keep a pair of ID tags on my key chain with a p-38 can opener.

I keep mine in a box and see no reason to wear them. I have my father's displayed in a shadow box with his name tag and wings. My father was a Captain in the Air Force who was killed when his Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star crashed during a training mission. These items bring me comfort.

I would if I still had them. my exhusband did something with them when I got out and we moved. I am thinking about ordering some new ones just to have them. they were a major part of my life even if it was for a short period of time.

I asked my dad when I was 11 if I could wear his. He made me promise not to lose them. Even at 11, I was pretty sure I couldn't do that. So I put them back where I found them. I picked up those tags the day he was killed by a drunk driver in 1992. I carry them every day. Haven't lost them yet.

No BUT I'm thinking about buying a replacement set. I still have my enlisted dog tags in a shadow box with my brag rags and assorted insignia (enlisted and officer), but my officer's dog tags went missing with my ex. (I suspect they may now be hanging on a voodoo doll)

SPC David Glines, I still have the dog tags I was issued at the reception station at Fort Jackson in OCT69. Having retired in MAY98, I never wear them, but even before then, as a reservist, I only wore them once a month. Like LTC Stephen F., the chain has a P-38 on it.

When I came home from Vietnam, I wasn't allowed to enjoy showing off my dog tags, or that I was a Vietnam veteran. I haven't worn them since 1967. Probably a couple of years before you were born.

I was just wondering how many still wear them like me another reason is my great uncle was a SGT. in the Army Air Corp during WW2 and he wore them till the day he died and he was buried with them around his neck he died in 2002 I asked him about them why he still had them on he said because a Soldier is issued them in basic and just because he didn't wear the uniform he is a solider till he dies

I did, for a while, but I don't any more. I think that I did at first because of habit, but I finally realized that it was not something that was expected of me and it really wasn't necessary any more.
I still have them in my top dresser drawer, right where they have always been, I don't think I will get rid of any more of the gear. What I still have will probably be here until my kids take it.

But that's interesting because I take IT classes and there's a guy in one if my classes that still wears his dog tags outside his civvies even though he's been out of the Navy for a few years now. I wear mine because regardless of being out, you can still be a target of an attack. Just the same, you can also help defend freedom even when you're out. Not only does it provide ID if something happens, it reminds me daily to uphold the values that were instilled in me. It also reminds me to strive to help others when needed, and those we have lost to the cause. I still have never been told to stop defending freedom, and personally I wouldn't anyways.

I have no idea where mine are.... Didn't wear them after bootcamp, except for a couple of times as a reservist, when we had to wear them on military transport (helicopters). Couldn't get them "updated" when I got married-- was told I didn't "need" dog tags in my billet, so.... Would have liked to have the medical alert tag updated, at least.

I wasn't allowed to wear any jewelry when I was in the Navy, even my dog tags. To the point that I don't even wear anything now, even my wedding ring. But I know exactly where it is, in the jewelry box, right next to my wife's. As for my dog tags, they are at the house somewhere.

My dog tags from the 1970's include my SS# so I keep it stashed away to avoid potential identity theft. I was never one to wear anything around my neck otherwise I might reconsider wearing it. Definitely would not put it on my keychain, if I were to lose them, anyone could figure out where i live and use the keys.

I used to when i first got out...I was air crew so we had one on the neck and one in boot. It was like being naked without them, after a while i just stopped wearing them. I have them on my key chain and the other in a drawer.

Occasionally. I keep them in my top dresser drawer and when I am digging around and find them I will wear them. I usually take them off after a few days when they start to bother me when I sleep. Then a few months later I will find them again wear them.

I have worn mine without missing a day since 1998. One of the tags on my chain is 45 years old and was issued in Basic and the other was a replacement issued in 1992. I wear them in solidarity with our brothers and sisters still serving.

I wore them for many years after I got out and one day I took them off and placed them with my challenge coins, insignia, unit patches etc. Some day I will put together a shadow box and display these things for everyone to see.

for the first couple of years I did. I wore them out of habit and the fact that I was missing the military life. I ended up joining the National Gaurds and felt better with my situation. After my term in the guards I was not allowed to continue due to my disability's. My tags hang on my wall as a constant reminder to all that enter my home, A VET lives here and will defend his home.

Yes every day. They serve the same purpose in civilian life as in the Military, Identification. I travel world wide for work and never am without them, although I have modified the SS number by removing the first 4 numbers.

Every single day. I wear one and another that my wife and kids got me that says "keep us close to your heart". The tag reminds me of brothers I don't see anymore and the other reminds me to stay true to my wife and kids. No one would ever know I wear them because I wear them as they are meant to be worn, under the shirt.

I choose not too, because unfortunately many irresponsible kids have worn them around their neck like a piece of jewelry while acting inappropriately and making it look tacky. Yes, I wear a modified one with rand and DoD ID instead of ssn, I wear it with a cross and my wedding ring, I keep one of my regular ones with one of my dad's (vietnam) and on of my mom's (desert storm) with me, if I had one for my grandfather's (WWII) and great grandfather (WWI) I'd carry them too. might have to have sets made for them and other family, friends of family and friends some day...

My wife asked for my original set. She has them in her jewelry box. I wear a replacement set to do what they were designed to do if something happens to me. I'm proud of my time in service and that's one of my ways of showing it.

Yes and no.
I never really wore my dog tags, ever (I was allergic to the metal, and for the life of me I could never get that darn chain down 550 cord or that plastic tubing [I was that soldier]). I had them on my person, though.
Now, I keep a dog tag on my key chain. I hate to be dark, but they are pretty much "death tags" and I figure if they are useful for medics in the service, they will be useful for EMTs if something happens to me and they happen to look at my keys.

I still where mine and it is a reminder that even though I am out of the service that there is someone else that is currently fighting for my freedom wearing theirs. It also help to remind me not to give up. I can still here the Air Force Motto in my head " Integrity First , Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do. i do when ever i travel or put on my veterans uniform i wear them and they are the very 1st issued to me i have had more than 1 pair in my 6 years and i have my dads i keep them on his burial flag case he was NAVY i was and still do things with my National Guard Unit 26th Infantry Division know as the YDVA Yankee Division Memorial Club of Boston and my unit was Co.C 101st Infantry 26th Division.

I don't. Mine are put away in the genealogical file in my file cabinet. As the family historian, they are precious. My husband has his, as he also has his father's. Our children have their own... My middle son, who was Army Infantry, has my father in law's knife, which he carried all thru his enlistment - from 1943 to 1972...

I wear my dog tags to this very day even after getting out of the Army. I think in my case I have gotten so use to wearing while serving in the military it would make me feel naked without them on. I also wear them for ID purpose just incase something were to happen to me.

Yes. I was an Army Aviator and could not fly without my dog tags. As such I had extra sets of them everywhere, just in case. Now, I wear them for two reasons. First is the strong sense of pride that I still have from my service. Second, I am now a safety professional in the scaffolding business which puts me at heights on partially completed scaffolds and on the tops of tall buildings. But the mush bigger risk that I take is as a motorcycle rider. (I ride with the US Military Vets Motorcycle Club.) When you are on a motorcycle people are always trying to kill you, so I have never stopped wearing the tags with my blood type on them.

I'm a firefighter now. But when I was in the Marines we were an artillery battery assigned to a Military Police company in Al Anbar province. This was in 2006 I.E.D attacks were high at the time, and our job was route clearing and escort, but from time to time we would just post up somewhere and try to catch people planting I.E.D's. During those post up times I would rub my tags together, it brought me comfort. These days I only wear them when I am at the firehouse for the same reason.

Had a medical issue a few years back and couldn't remember my name or any thing else. my dog tags were my only id until hours later when I recovered enough to talk my wallet was in my truck and it didn't take the trip to the hospital with me . So better safe than remain unknown
