Should we expect to go to war to stop North Korea from this goal? We know they are already close to having the capability. Do public statements like this encourage more aggressive actions from dictators like KJU?

What is the strategic goal of a public statement like this? What do you think he hopes to accomplish?

Major you probably know better than I that this is hyperbolic bullshit. (Un saying it, not your questions). Oh, I'm sure he means it, and I'm sure he thinks he'll be capable of it, but the reality is is that his one-off missiles have a very poor likelihood of 1. surviving their inexperience in shrinking nuclear payloads to an effective ICBM size, and 2. getting past our countermeasures. He isn't Russia, much as he'd like to think he is. Fat Boy Leader is just throwing yet another tantrum.

It could have multiple meanings. That North Korean technology is shoddy and it will fail. That we are capable of intervening and preventing the launch or destroying the missile before it reaches its target. Or that we will intervene politically or militarily to prevent the launch or further development.

I think we should have listened in the 80's when we were advised to start building a nuclear missle defense shield. Do you think we could have made some real progress with 30 years of development time? Maybe the new administration will get us protected? A super laser perhaps capable of firing from a space platform? Oh that's right, we have scuttled the space shuttle program! Who could have possibly guessed we might need it? The threat of nuclear destruction for over 60 years and we still have no plan for defending ourselves against a homicidal maniac ruler of N. Korea, Pakistan, and soon Iran. I wonder from time to time what the US would do if NK launched a missile at US and it fell short and exploded in the ocean about a mile off shore where everyone could see the mushroom cloud rise into the air. How much of a response would be enough or sufficient or proper in such a case? No one knows for sure..

This is sort of a baited question. The real answer, and not the one you are fishing for, is that the US and other allies will continue to apply economic sanctions and deny ITAR items and technology from flowing into the country. It means that we will continue to intercept ships carrying illegal cargo heading to North Korea and seize those assets. The strategic goal and what Trump hopes to accomplish with his public statement is the same one that has been spoken by previous presidents and has been the diplomatic stance with North Korea for decades.

Seems to me North Korea has been on the verge of having a viable delivery system since the the early 90's. In fact I remember winning a bet with a fellow SNCO who was convinced that N. Korea was going to invade S. Korea following a nuclear strike. Didn't happen, and I got a case of beer. As to the Pres. Elect's comments... Lets face, we got what we voted for, it was either gonna be him, undisciplined, inexperienced, flamboyant. Or we could have got the other. Disliked by most, indecisive, motivated solely by self interest, no real tested leadership ability, the very best of the worst type of politician.

Whenever I hear of North Korea pulling some stunt, I am reminded about the movie The Mouse That Roared. It's basically about an impoverished country who declares war on the US in order to lose so the US can swoop in with financial aide to build up the economy and infrastructure. Sound familiar...

Personally, I don't believe North Korea is anywhere close to being a real threat and with their great dictator executing half his family and cabinet, I wouldn't be surprised if his head ends up on a pike one of these days.

North Korea is going to bluster all day long. That's why we have intelligence briefs to determine the accuracy of these blusters. I don't anticipate going to war with North Korea anytime soon. I find it far more likely that a bomb would just happen to drop on his palace in the middle of the night.

I do not believe that public statements cause dictators to become more aggressive. Trump didn't create KJU. Trump wasn't even running for President when KJU inherited the throne and then proceeded to publicly execute his family members and high ranking officials.

So no... dictators are going to act like dictators no matter how we act publicly. Remember, we let the Nazis and the Third Reich run wild in Europe. It wasn't until the Kamikazes attacked us that we joined the fight.

The strategic goal of a public statement like this should be obvious. To calm the fears of the general public and hint a bit of a warning at enemies. We don't want to look weak in public. So you put on a tough façade. If you're lucky, that will be enough to keep an enemy in check.

It reminds me of the fact that president Clinton sold our GPS technology to the Chinese for campaign contributions. This just made it possible for the Communists to get the technical ability to pinpoint target their delivery systems. I'm sure they share that technology with North Korea. North Korea completed its nuclear program after Jimmy Carter worked out a deal between North Korea and the Clinton administration. It wasn't until GWB accused them of cheating in their deal and included them in his Axis of Evil group that it all came out. Within a year, North Korea became a nuclear power. They had never actually given up their nuclear ambitions. Clinton and Carter both got played. If we're not careful, Iran will be the next to pull the wool over our eyes. Based on the Obama administration, they think the U.S. will not act regardless how much they cheat on the nuclear deal.

It seems to mean that the new President will not let North Korea develop a weapon capable of reaching the US...because that is what he said? I, at least, think that would be a good thing? Does anyone in the US want the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to have that capability? I hope not BUT no one here should want that!
Stopping the North Koreans from developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching the US would be a much easier thing for the US if past presidents had placed stronger barriers in place, in my opinion?
We should always expect to go to war with our enemies, especially those enemies who we have been at war with for over 60 years? North Korea is our enemy, attacked South Korea and threatens them today. Unlike the Summer of 1950, I do not think the North Korean would be able to defeat the South and I do not think the Chinese would be interested in coming to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's aid if they did make that mistake? BUT we should still expect the worst.
What is the strategic goal of a public statement? Putting the North Korean's on notice. Letting them know their is a new sheriff in town. That is what all public statements are about, the President Elect has just used a new medium.
What do I think he hopes to accomplish? Stopping the Democratic People's Republic of Korea from developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching the US.

It's a smart strategy that Ronald Reagan also used. Keep your opposition off balance and unsure of what you mean and what your going to do. It serves deterrence far more than to preannounce everything in advance including troop levels and troop deployment objectives. Reagan used to load the 82nd Airborne on the C141's regularly and send them to all areas of the globe to send a strong message but he would remain silent and ambiguous of the mission of the 82nd. Obama wouldn't do that unless he announced it months in advance, indicated total number of troops in the deployment and what their exact mission was (very weak foreign policy, IMV and wastes far more taxpayer funds).

I'm guessing it is a continuation of PE Trumps not so subtle messages to China. While Kim Fatty Fat is still their problem to fix, the PE is saying one way or another the problem will get fixed. On the other hand, if anyone in uniform doesn't like what the future President of the United States is saying (or Tweeting) they should think about separating.
