Is there a way I can go being Guard or would I have to switch to AD to go with him?As a member of the NG, can I go to Japan or Korea with my AD husband, or would I have to switch to AD to go with him?2019-01-15T20:42:42-05:00PFC Private RallyPoint Member4289988<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I’m in the GA guard and my husband is at fort hood. You can look into a conditional release to switch to Army or Air Force Reserves if there is a Reserve unit near where he will be stationed, or just request a hardship discharge from the Guard because you will be moving OCONUS and international flights for drill would be a financial hardship.<br />If you go AD, you would likely end up in the BCT/AIT pipeline during his tour, making that OCONUS tour a one year unaccompanied.Response by SGM Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 15 at 2019 9:36 PM2019-01-15T21:36:57-05:002019-01-15T21:36:57-05:00LTC John Shaw4290073<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div><br />Your chances of going as a member of the GA guard are very small / impossible. There are few or no slots for PFC attached to the Guard and you would have to be transferred from your current NG unit.<br />If you want to go overseas with your husband and you want active duty, you need to request enrollment into the Married Army Couples Program, this is where the Army will attempt to keep you within 100 miles of each other for dual career assignment.<br />First, you will need the GA NG to agree to release you. You will find most the time the Guard does not want to release you because they have their own recruiting and retention goals.<br />If you want to go with your husband as a spouse, not tied to an active assignment, this may possible but again, the GA NG will need to transfer you to Inactive NG roster.<br />Your best bet is to be straight with your Command admin personnel and find out what is possible. You can call military one source or the Human Resources Command they may have information.<br />Here is the mailbox and phone I found on-line.<br />"We welcome your questions concerning Military OneSource, Military and Family Life Counseling, and Child and Youth Behavioral Counseling services by e-mail or phone:<br />Email: [login to see] <br />Phone: [login to see] ."Response by LTC John Shaw made Jan 15 at 2019 9:36 PM2019-01-15T21:36:59-05:002019-01-15T21:36:59-05:00SPC Chris Ison4290254<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>What you would need to do is transfer tot he inactive Nation Guard (it is the equivalent to the IRR). Your spouse also needs permission to bring you. Once in Japan, you can look and see if there are any reserve units. I am not sure if there are any non CONUS units in the reserves.<br /><br />depending on your MOS, you might be able to transfer to the reserves, and then apply for some type of active duty tour as a reservist.Response by SPC Chris Ison made Jan 15 at 2019 11:03 PM2019-01-15T23:03:03-05:002019-01-15T23:03:03-05:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member4291341<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>You need to ask for a conditional release which will put you in the IRR.
