As a leader, do you cross-reference other branches manuals?

I have found great interest in reading the Army Leadership & Marine Leadership manuals, as well as field tactic manuals. Part of this comes from the AFSC I was in & always thought it would be a good idea to integrate the skills that the other branches that have been doing field stuff for much longer use.

I believe it really depends on your career field. For myself I have no choice.

Have to as an MSC. We integrate with the Army and assemble as one.

yes and being in my second joint assignment it still proves beneficial. but even prior to these assignments i used to reference them, along with talking to my friends/colleagues from the other services. it will add more tools to your "batman utility belt" but remember to keep an open mind. things may seem stupid, but they're just different. take what you can apply and let the rest go.

It helps to know the regulations of other branches, especially if you work in a ''joint'' environment. For example, I didn't know that the Navy had more relaxed standards when it came to mustache length and shaping. Sailors can have a much more realistic looking mustache than the ''Hitler'' style mustaches that we're only able to grow in the Army.

I wouldn’t say that I cross-reference the manuals but I do see the conduct of other branches and the one I’m in and compare the actions of individuals of similar grade between the branches.

You all the tools you can.
Being that I went to the air guard after being the Corps and army guard I found the difference especially discipline to be unnerving at the best

A1C, I think that learning the way that the other branches does a lot in developing yourself as a leader. The fact that you're doing this as an E3 shows that you already care about the mission. I was Army. In 2002, I found myself in an Army Company assigned to a Marine Batallion in Africa. My post Sergeant Major was USMC. My post Commander was USN. Our Military Police Company was relieved by a USAF SP unit when we jumped to Iraq. Keep charging forward. You'll do very well.

Anything you do to give yourself an edge is good. That said as a leader pulling ideas on leadership and regulations from other branches just helps you be a more knowledgeable leader and knowledge is power. I was SF and we found ourselves in many joint operational sittuations so its usefull to know how they do things.
