Guidance from DA Pam 670-1 dated 10 Apr 15 is as follows. Based on this change to regimental affiliation policy, requests to affiliate with a unit in order to wear that unit's DUI are no longer required. Soldiers may affiliate with a unit an wear the DUI based on their assignment history.

21–24. Insignia representing regimental affiliation
a. Authorization. AR 670–1 authorizes insignia used to represent regimental affiliation to consist of either the RDI or DUI. A Soldier’s Regimental affiliation using an RDI is based on a Soldier’s branch/corps/special branch as determined by PMOS or specialty. A Soldier’s Regimental affiliation using a DUI is based on a unit in which the Soldier is serving or previously successfully served. Soldiers may wear the RDI for their affiliated regiment or may wear the DUI for a unit in which they are serving or have previously successfully served based off their assignment history as indicated in their personnel record.
b. How worn. The RDI or DUI, when worn as insignia to represent regimental affiliation, are worn as outlined in paragraph 21–23.

However comma pause as you are NG:

"FYSA All,
As you know, AR 600-82 was rescinded by the new AR 670-1. However, NGR 600-82 (attached below) was not rescinded and is still in effect for ARNG soldiers (and continues to be listed as a reference in AR670-1). ARNG unit affiliation is still state-based and requires TAG approval for any out-of-state ARNG affiliations; USAR and AC unit affiliations by active ARNG soldiers, regardless of prior service, are not currently permitted.
For general SA, CMH is preparing to assume responsibility for the Army regimental system…. and will become the proponent for a new AR 600-82. We will be updating NGR 600-82 concurrently, and expect to open up affiliation for low-density branches and CS/CSS types to allow them to affiliate with their unit of assignment vice their branch/corps, clarifying the process in AR 670-1, as well as expanding the regimental system to non-combat arms units. We do not, however, anticipate any significant change to a state-based affiliation requirement."

It should be noted that NGR 600-82 attached to the site states revision date was dated 11 Oct 93, and my google-fu tells me this is still somehow current.

This was also addressed in an older post located at
https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/670-1-change-dui-or-rdi

The proposed Army uniform policy changes seem to indicate that the individual will now have the choice to wear the RDI, or through affiliation the DUI.I would personally prefer to wear my former infantry regiment's crest, but current policy prohibits me as an AG soldier. Is anyone else reading this the way I am?
