Are you interested in working in debt collections? Is there a stigma surrounding those who contact individuals or businesses regarding debt?

There is a stigma attached to this line of work, and I want to know how many of you are actually EAGER work in the industry.

I tried it, and at the time I had some financial troubles (30) years ago, I couldn't make it past training. I just didn't have the heart.

I worked as a debt collector for deceased debt. I had my fill of that career field. Im good.

GySgt Bryan A. McGown "Gunny" I have been in this industry along with my military career for over 35 years now and it’s an awesome industry. You can make e a lot of money with the right attitude and you can reach higher levels of management with your military leadership skills and background. It takes a real self-starter and a highly motivated individual that loves to communicate on the phone and who really knows how to sell and negotiate. There are rules to be followed and I believe veterans make great collectors, assistant collection managers, collection managers, directors, vice president of operations, and right up to Presidents, COOs, and CEOs. It is a great industry for IT savvy individuals, compliance minded individuals, and Human resources/Training. The opportunities are there for a lot of veterans. It does have a stigma attached to it, but so do a lot of other positions in life. Get over it!

I think there is a stigma on debt collections....and I want nothing to do with it....from either end.

Its tough trying to convince someone to make arrangements on a debt that has basically been sold to a "junk" debt collector for pennies on the dollar. My opinion of the unscrupulous employees is that they will apply illegal tactics to try and scare the debtor into compliance.

Actually applied for a job in debt collections center for a major company that "helps" military families......once I saw what they (the company) do to "help" I was out....25% loans, loans to people with sub 300 credit rating, and much worse.....all because they know they reach out to Uncle Sugar to get their money........leaches all of them (well least the ones I dealt with).

I don't worry to much if I am mistakenly called by a debt collector. They have a job to do and I can respect that. Early in my life, I was HORRIBLE at managing money and had my fair share of folks calling. I am sure that there is good and bad debt collectors. As far as being eager to work in the business, I honestly don't know enough about it to say one way or the other. I think the Army has set me up to be a great employee once I figure out where 'home' is going to be and I start seriously looking for work.

Unfortunately, the industry is plagued with criminals, and that stigma is always going to be there.
