You have to be willing to put your people first, you have to develop them, but you also have to be willing to step up at times and say "it has to be this way". I've never met a good leader who wasn't also an effective manager, though I have seen managers who couldn't lead. You have to have a mix. A boss would be someone who tells them what the standard is. I believe to a certain extent it also depends on where you fall at rank/job wise. A COL or LTC is a boss. he tells his battalion and company commanders respectively what needs to happen and what the standard is, but that person should also be a leader by leading by example on what those standards are. While those at a company level should be more of a leader then a boss. At that level you are the one molding and training your soldiers everyone from the team leader to the company commander. And I took advantage of every opportunity to give leadership responsibilities to everyone -E1 and up.
