How about asking "Have they ever left"? It's well known that Russia has supported Assad as a way to maintain their sphere of influence over there. Now with the US taking a more "proactive" role in the ME, it makes sense that Russia would make a "show of force/support" to Assad to bolster their interests and get the world off their case for the Ukraine. Vlad and Assad are bromancing again, trying to bolster each others sphere of influence in a part of the world normal people would like to forget about. The problem is you have a pyromaniac and a madman teaming up near a powder keg.
