Are we required to get updated ID tags with the DoD number if we still have SSN?

They've been making this transition for a number of years now and I have yet to have a command tell me that it MUST be done.

If you really want to know. Dumb as it sounds, call up the TDS office. They get paid to know all sorts of regulations. I've never heard of it.

I can attest that during my last CSTX mission, my BN had EVERYONE that was BOG at CSTX get new tags with their DoD ID Number.

REQUIRED, no. They are to stop ISSUING them, but I have not seen any ALARACT, DA, or DODI directive indicating a mandatory replacement. My thought is that they are planning on doing like they do for uniforms: Wear them until they break/die, then replace them with the correct stuff. There are benefits to replacing them on your own (PERSEC), but no requirements issued. Local commands may "strongly urge" to privately buy or order them to place information for getting military issue tags ordered, but it is done at a local command level so far.

I've been one of many names put down on paper that leadership has wanted names of all who need updated dog tags with DoD ID number still has yet to happen. So if I was you don't worry about it. Focus on more important things.

Everyone should get them. Who wants to be the person that their SRP requires them and your day is longer because you are given a short timeline to get them. I personally wear one each because I don't want to end up dead and those doing the processing are on an old system.

Your nco should issue you a new dog tag with your dod number if not just have some made then again its all unit based

My unit said to start getting them and has been directing people slowly to our S1 to get blanks and go to SRP. Only took me the drive there really.. The guy did it in 2 minutes.

The new set of Dog Tags are required to go to any army schools now, such as BLC or Air Assault.

Only time it must be done is if you are getting deployed soon but they will give you blank tags for that

I have two sets of my dads from WW2 and Korea. One enlisted and one O-2. His seriak number began with an O. He used it for a PIN for years.
