Are we on the verge of another Korean war?

Artillery is being exchanged. Tensions are high. The already tenuous situation feels like it's eroding faster. Are we on the verge of another Korean war? Why or why not? What will it be like 2 to 5 years from now?

Meh, this happens fairly regularly over there...It happened when I was stationed over there last year...
Just a lot of posturing if you ask me...North Korea pushes the limits...South Korea answers back...things go back to normal for a while. Lather, Rinse, Repeat

North Korea is crazy enough to try once more. Makes you wonder if its because they dont think the current admin will do anything to help South Korea. But I could be wrong on this one but the US has NO option but to help correct?

I'm in korea now and nobody is getting over stressed about this exchange. South fire 36 rounds back at Norths 1 round. South is still pretty pissed about the Soldiers injured by mine planted on Souths side. Were ready if need be.

Technically the war never ended. I believe it's a ceasefire. The two Koreas exchange heat from time to time with no full scale invasion in the works. This event was pretty significant, however. Unsure of any casualties. 2-5 years from now will probably be the same. Random skirmishes and shellings.

I read this article from CNN over an hour ago. Do I personally feel that there is a another Korean War about start? The answer would be a resounding NO. Let's not forget that the Korean War never ended, they closed in an armistice (cease fire) however no peace treaty was ever signed closing out the war. Also don't forget that similar attacks happened in 2010 and even worse in 2014. While North Korea is posturing boldly, their biggest ally China is already proclaimed that they will not back them unless United States tech comes first. So am I worried about another Korean war starting no, am I feeling that the armistice will fail? Not currently but given time and provocation, possibly in time.

Doubt something will go beyond the occasional fire exchange. However, if it happens better be after the elections are over because it seems there is no intention to commit any force into the peninsula beside what is already planned.

This isn't new really. It hasn't happened since October but they exchange fire somewhat regularly.

What's interesting is seeing what the South sees as a response in kind. If I can find the link historically it's quite amusing. Something to the effect of the North throws a paper airplane, South bombs Pyongyang (ok not quite that bad)

Normally, I would say no, but Un is nuts. I suspect he's going to learn a hard lesson though, because China seems to be tired of their antics. There will be no North Korea by the time we're done. I'm hoping NK leadership will wise up and are prepared for Dear Leader to have a tragic heart attack. So sad to lose someone so young!

That said, I really hope we have a plan to disable/destroy NK's nuclear capabilities the moment hostilities seem unavoidable.

Kim Jung Un is like a child playing with little green army men, only problem is it is a nation, with real people. What needs to happen is his daddy (China) needs to put the spoiled brat over his knee, and paddle his behind.

In seriousness, I am afraid that crazy runs in the family, and it is possible that he will do something incredibly stupid like rekindling the war. The difference being that this time, the world is a different place. I do not think that China, or any of the allies PRK had during the first war would be so quick to come to their aid. Furthermore, I don't think that the United States would be quick to throw soldiers at the problem. Our military has been at war since 2001. We are still dealing with ISIL, Afghanistan, and Putin. Iraq is falling apart, and may heat up again. Strategically there is no benefit to the United States getting into a war between the Koreans.

We would assist in some way, we do have forces on the ground there already. We MUST protect our soldiers to the best of our means. Military wise I think we would limit our involvement to air strikes, and air superiority. Diplomacy wise, I think we would work with China to resolve the issue. If he launches nuclear weapons though, all bets are off. If he decides that is the way to go, EVERYONE will be against him. Everyone will work together to take the toys away from the spoiled brat.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un ordered his frontline troops onto a war-footing from Friday, as military tensions with South Korea soared following a rare exchange of artillery shells across their heavily fortified border.

The North's official KCNA news agency said the move came during an emergency meeting late Thursday of the powerful Central Military Commission of which Kim is the chairman.

During the meeting, Kim ordered frontline, combined units of the Korean People's Army (KPA) to "enter a wartime state" from Friday 5:00pm (0800 GMT).

The troops should be "fully battle ready to launch surprise operations" while the entire frontline should be placed in a "semi-war state," KCNA quoted him as saying.

The CMC meeting came hours after the two Koreas traded artillery fire on Thursday, leaving no apparent casualties but pushing already elevated cross-border tensions to dangerously high levels.

The KPA followed up with an ultimatum sent via military hotline that gave the South 48 hours to dismantle loudspeakers blasting propaganda messages across the border or face further military action.

The ultimatum expires on Saturday at 5:00pm.

I think it is far more likely we will see a "Humanitarian Effort" than a "Hot Conflict" in regards to Korea.

SSgt Alex Robinson They are still at war. I watched Fire and Ice documentary all weekend, quite compelling. I didn't know the longest retreat in U.S. Military occurred in Korea and the first truce signed by Gen. Clarke of WWII. Interesting dialogue. Sparks can fly anytime and it could be war only time will tell.

The Korean War began because a US President assured the communists (via his Secretary of State) that the United States would not defend South Korea. (Apparently he had a change of heart after the North invaded.) I expect the same would happen if again the US signaled its lack of interest in defending the South. Of course, the current Administration seems to have assured all that it has no interest in defending anyone (and the North launches its submarine force and begins reconing the DMZ with artillery - anyone surprised?)

North Korea is like a spoiled little child seeking attention. Then after they get it, they are good for little while. Would all out war break out with North moving South. Doubt it. One factor, Big Brother China. China knows that the North would lose and they wont let that happen. So, they keep little Kim in check....for now.

Nope just some old fashioned Foot Stomping and Testosterone Checks "Mine is bigger than yours". 2 Poor South Korean Soldiers went into the DMZ in an area that had previously been cleared of mines and it turns out North Korea put them back an 2 soldiers are missing some limbs. In retaliation South Korea turned out it's loud speaker Propaganda System. The North got pissed and tried to take the loud speakers out with 4 heavy artillery rounds. South Korea responded with at least one 16 inch round (Ah Iowa Class Battleship Size Bullet). They seem to be playing nice again and I think I heard the Speakers have been turned off again (They had been silent for 11 years before this latest situation).
