Yet, there is a need to level the playing field to the point where everyone has an equal place at the table. As someone with European and Native American backgrounds, having lived my life overseas, most discrimination seemed to be against "Americans" and "Foreigners" not just folk from different tribes. It took a long time to understand issues of race and gender in the United States. It's taken just as long to understand that we have a police problem compounded by fears of stereotypes that are sometimes perpetuated by the very races that perpetuate them. Like it or not, agree with it or not, the US Military, nudged by Congress, has been a leader in implementing serious social changes in the areas of race, gender, sexual orientation. We still have difficulty recognizing when we've been all that we can be.
