I doubt there is anything those turds have in the inventory that our Navy won't pee themselves from laughing so hard. In the extreme instance that something does do some damage, I would hate to be on the receiving end for the payback.

Well said, PO1 Russell Henson. It's amazing what damage even a couple of guys in a rowboat can cause if you let your guard down.

But when was the last time a US Navy ship has actually been sunk? That tells you something about the level of professionalism and training the members of the Damage Control teams have!

PO1 John Miller, it also helps to be lucky. Ask the Royal Navy, who have had way more ships shot at in earnest than we have in the half-century.

When the HMS Sheffield went down in 1982, the fact that the missile impact happened to take out the firefighting system was a major factor in the ship continuing to burn for 3 days. In marked contrast, HMS Glamorgan was able to contain the fire caused by an Exocet detonating in the hangar, right under the ship's fully fueled ASW helicopter. HMS Ardent was lost because one of the bombs which struck her breached several watertight bulkheads. HMS Antelope was lost after attempts to disarm an undetonated bomb caused it to detonate -- and it's worth noting that several of Her Majesty's ships survived the Falklands War after being hit by multiple bombs solely because the bombs didn't detonate (while flying too low for the Brits' missiles to engage them, the Argentinian pilots were also flying too low for the bombs to arm before impact).

In contrast to that (incomplete) list of RN ships which have been attacked, we've only had 2: the USS Stark (hit while underway by 2 Exocet missiles, 1 of which detonated) and the USS Cole (attacked while refueling). In the case of the Stark, the ensuing investigation found serious fault with the conduct of several officers on the ship:

SN Greg Wright - no doubt if it did the missile sponge or in this case torpedo would take it for the carrier. Modern US navy is all about the carrier and rightfully so.

I wasn't a Sonar Tech, but if I remember ESWS training (which ironically I got on a Carrier), isn't SLQ-25 AKA Nixie designed to throw the sonar in torpedoes off so that it will go after Nixie instead of the intended target?

PO1 John Miller - That's one countermeasure. There are others, including counter-fire, spoofing, ...etc. But you know all that.

PO1 John Miller - Yes but only for Acoustic torpedoes which the Soviets and most other enemy navies suck at. Most of the effective sub to ship torpedo systems are fire and forget like the wakehomer and this rocket torpedo. Unlike the wire guided 48 ADCAP which is almost impossible to defeat. The STS on the sub would laugh when he saw the SLQ-25 and say "fat chance" but that is why we are lucky they are on our side.
