There are two primary concentrations AC officers can pursue:51A and 51C. Seek out the 51Cs on your installation to find out what they do and what AC life is like. I'm a 51A and you are more than welcome to PM me to ask questions about the 51A side. Currently, I would advise getting as much as experience on the tactical side as you can. I think you can assess between 6-8 years in the Army and will have to have at least one CPT KD eval IOT submit a VTIP packet. I hope this helps a bit. I was selected for the AAC and it was not a difficult choice. I transitioned to GS-15 after I retired from Defense Systems Management College. It is not an easy career though as managing cost, schedule and performance on Acquisition Programs is difficult. Once you are excepted you will on the business side of the Army. You will be a contract officer, or test officer, or a program manager. all these position work toward one thing, providing the Warfighter will the best equipment possible. The jobs can be frustrating but also very rewarding. I finished command a few months ago and am awaiting to attend the AAPC before going on to my first unit. I am going to a 51A slot so send me some questions if you need some advice on the selection process and transition to FA 51 or want to know what the 51A side is like. Read everything acquisition related, learn the process and read the FAR. You will receive a lot of unsolicited advice on what to do, it works best when you know whether that advice is leading you in the right direction, or not.
