Are members of the SMCR allowed to enter MSG duty if all requirements are met?

I cannot locate a pub, MARADMIN or MCO that disallows reservists to put in a package for this. Please advise.

I would contact these warriors to define the specifics, however, I believe you need to go active duty first as these are special duty assignments.

Last I checked MSG duty is only for active duty Marines......it is a 3 year tour...you can always contact the school house to find out or even HDQRTS Marine Corps........

I'm not sure if a reservist can do MSG duty since you need to be active for 3+ years and do 3 different embassies. If you can get activation orders for that duration I say yes submit a package.

The SMCR aren't eligible for the program, nor are Active Reservists....I worked with the SMCR in Dayton, OH. You have to be on active duty. The SMCR are designed to augment the active forces during times of war or national emergencies. Your Reserve Recruiter (an AR) has access to all the pubs and has contact with: HQ 4th MarDiv and HQMC. He or she has all the answers or knows someone who does; don't let them tell you otherwise.

The duty requires PCS orders overseas, as with any lengthy B or C school there is a requirement for years or service in that MOS. That alone disqualifies Reservists.

A reservist cannot meet the obligated 18 months time on station needed to qualify for MSG duty.

All Marines accepted to Marine Security Guard school must have at least 36 months of obligated service upon reporting to MSG school. Therefore; only active duty Marines may submit a package.

Short answer is no. Long answer is that you have to be Active duty among other qualifiers to be eligible. If you don't beleive this group of people I recommend contacting your career planner or the MSG recruiter.

In addition to the time-in-service requirements others have mentioned, I believe MSG watch standers (not NCOICs) have to be unmarried. At least they did when I was an MSG 30-plus years ago.

Go talk to your PSR at your unit. He should have you fill out an Individual Augmentee package and he can tell you what billets are available for specific MOS's, rank, and location. MSG would be included in that. Don't forget to let you Chain of Command know your intentions too, they may know some people doing B billets that can put in a good word for you

The NCOs and SNCOs that replied are dead on. Just as a general tip...It's been a long time (1998) since I was in the Corps, but things haven't changed that much according to many buddies still in. In general, Marine Corps directives are not created to document whether we are ineligible for something (If that were they case, they'd still be typing!). They are created or published to establish criteria or eligibility for various programs. If you do not meet that criteria, it is SOP to interpret you are ineligible, or disallowed, as you put it. Go active duty / regular - and pursue your dreams! The Marine Corps as a culture and institution smiles down on hard chargers that seek out "B billets" as they were once called (maybe still are). Those that actually serve in them for a tour or two even more so. Stay hard and Semper Fi!

No. Apply for active duty, then apply for the program. Short and simple.
