Anybody ever have a 1SG and Commander who were so good that, if they stayed in that unit, you wouldn't leave?

I have been told...
But I always demur to my Soldiers. They are the ones that make the unit what it is. All I can do is guide the ship and set standards and goals.
More like - I have a unit that is so good, I never want to leave as First Sergeant.

Unfortunately it's just not an option, Command and 1SG positions are short lived and rotate very rapidly.

Good Company leadership provides it's Soldier's and Officers a comfortable, honorable and predictable work environment. Everyone needs a couple years of that once in a while. Can you stay? No. Get promoted and run your own Company, now that you know how a good one
works .

A good command climate is a nice thing to have, but eventually, new positions and new people are best for everyone because it promotes continued learning. Even Soldiers in a good command climate with quality people they enjoy working with will eventually stagnate. Enjoy it while you have it and then it's time for everyone to move on to the next assignment!

1SGT Richard Welch, would tell me "Sir, just go ahead and leave, but come back at 1630, and bring beers, and take credit for what we done" I took his advice often.

I have had at least 4 Company Commanders that I served as 1SG under that I wouldn't leave 1 of them went on to be my BN. Commander

I had the privilege to serve as the 1SG of the best Light Infantry company I have ever known. The Non-Commissioned Officers led by example and the soldiers responded wonderfully. I merely received our Commander's guidance and steered the ship. B Co, 1-14 Infantry will forever be in my heart.

Besides you learn as much if not more from bad leaders as excellent ones

How not to do it is as relevant as how to do it...most never get this

Yes, take the knowledge and skills that they possessed and spread the wealth by your own leadership. They were lead and taught by great leaders same as yourself. Now its your turn to step up and displayed what was passed onto you.

Discounting troop handlers, almost every one. I don't miss my first Platoon. 3007, Hotel, 3rd Bn PISC. I'd be honored and glad to serve with all of the DIs and most of the Platoon. I ran across some of our Drill Instructors up the road. Bought our SDI a fifth of Crown Royal in Japan. For letting me slip through.

1SG, no. I've had great 1SGs in my career but never any that would make me stay in the unit if they stayed. I did have one CSM that I would absolutely stay for.

As far as CPTs, not sure if it was because he was so good, but I had a CPT that I would like to serve with again.
