Though most were Marines, there were others from all branches of the military there.
It was devistating to those of us in the Marines, on that base or Cherry Point. So many of us are 'generational Marines' with parents, siblings, cousins, and spouses serving at the same time, and so many of those were lost that day.
I was at a Church Fish Fry, raising money to outfit a home for one of the Marines who had been wounded in Lebanon earlier on, when I heard the news. I remember just sitting there, thinking of my cousin, the husband of a really close friend, my husband's boot-camp buddy, and two neighbors that we knew of in that unit alone, then I got up and walked back to my car, stopping to throw up behind a tree before I reached the car.
To this day, the smell of frying fish makes me ill. I remember thinking I wonder if I am going to lose any of my friends and family, and was expecting to have to turn around and return to base when I got home and checked in at the reserve center.
