I like to use the CFC information to evaluate charities for efficiency, but I can't find them in the book.

Actually, charities have to do a lot of paperwork to get into CFC and CFC cost money to the charity. That is why a lot of smaller charities can not afford to get into CFC. (Trump charity did not need CFC donors. I think it was for much larger donors than what we get paid.)

CFC is for public charities that receive money from many individuals. The Donald J. Trump Foundation is a private charity, which receives its money primarily from one individual. Thus, the Donald J. Trump Foundation doesn't need/want crowd-sourced donations.

Another great resource for evaluating charities is Charity Navigator.

So, just to make sure I understand - the Trump Foundation is where Trump gives money which then gets donated to other charities. Why would he not just donate to other charities directly instead of through his own middle-man?

MAJ Bryan Zeski - Good question. The most common reasons could be expanded giving options (can donate to individuals, foreign nonprofit organizations, or non-charitable organizations), remaining in control of the donated funds, smoothing of donations across years, using the foundation as a means to hire family members, privacy from charities seeking donations, preferential tax treatment of donations, etc.

MAJ Bryan Zeski - Bill Gates and most the big or rich guys do it this way. Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation is his foundation.
