Am I the only person that is happy about the new PT uniform?

Since I arrived at my new duty station, I have heard several SMs discussing the new PT uniform. Some of these discussions have been in passing, and I did not even know them. But I am surprised that the vast majority are against the new look. What are your thoughts?

I can take it or leave it. I usually only wear one 4 times a year max. I'll check out the new ones when I can get ahold of them. They sound promising.

Anything is better than the all gray trunks, shirt, and sweatsuit when I got in in 96.

Don't get me wrong I am fond of the colors but it is not practical during most Fitness Times especially since they saved a whole $3 per uniform on the reflective portion. I mean seriously? Not to mention I am not seeing the savings on my end that is for sure.

SGM Billy Herrington, this young SGT has no idea what you are talking about. I do and those definitely were not user friendly, especially in the rain.

According to what I read SSG James J. Palmer IV it does not have any reflective material in it. Just a stripe that happens to be yellow. not to mention a group of Soldiers I work with just bought it so I was able to confirm that it is indeed non-reflective.

We have no choice but to embrace the new look as that is what has been decided. I just wish those making these decisions would think of the cost to young Soldiers. Yes we get a stipend for uniforms but it barely covers the cost of the duty uniforms needed for the year. Lest we not forget that the duty uniform is changing within the same year. I am thinking of the young Soldier.

Now for the positives; as CW5 Private RallyPoint Member stated, it is definitely the best looking uniform for fitness the ARMY has had in who knows how long?
Another good thing is they got the sizes correct this time. Hopefully this helps out the taller Soldiers who seemed to have problems with the uniform being phased out.
I definitely like it personally.

I am late to the party as usual but will throw my two cents in...

The Army sent out a huge survey and followed up with a bunch of testing. The survey was targeted at the highest population of the Army PVT-SPC although other ranks were included. The "panel" of your peers voted for three uniforms with the current uniform "out performing" the others.

This will be the fifth P.T. uniform I have worn since being in the Army and probably the last. I think it looks better but have not purchased one yet so can't speak to the fit.

I like the look of everything but the jacket. I do like that we have options in the material. The Navy has had this option for a few years now and seems to be reasonably popular with many of the Sailors I have met.

My main concern is: how hot is black on black going to be in the summer in certain locations? That's my primary concern. A secondary concern is how will formations and Soldierly appearance look if we find that the t-shirts fade like most black shirts do? Seems like that could drive maintenance costs up a bit.

SGT,

I've been wearing the APFU since October and I love it. I bought several sets so I can wear the APFU every day. The fit is better and less constricted, the pants flow better around the ankles and the jacket is light-weight, comfy, and doesn't go "swish-swish" when you walk. I wash my uniforms regularly and they haven't begun to fade at all in the last 3 months.

Someone said that the jacket is supposed to be reflective? Well, I guess I got cheated because my jacket isn't the least bit reflective. Definitely need a PT belt with this one during low visibility.

I agree, the material sucked. However, the design was ok and the pattern did not need to be changed. I have had a total of ten uniform changes in 16 years. I started off with the BDU's, then DCU's, then the old PT grey to new PT, then the Barrett, then ACU's, Then ASU's, then Multicam, FRACU, Now the new PFU's. I've also had the Green Flight Suits, Brown Flight Suits, ACU Flight Suits (x2). I'm tired of buying a "new Uniform".

Oh, and I forgot the ACU replacement.... Did I say 10? I meant 11... and counting.

Don't fix something that isn't broke. The material on the new uniforms is better, but for the cost of transitioning I do not think the change is worth it.

Let's make a PT uniform with a built in reflective belt....and then tell soldiers they still need to wear a reflective belt. Yeah, I'm going to go with fail on that one.

The reason that I put "Keep the old look" has nothing to do with the LOOK though. These new PT uniforms are cheaply made and so lightweight on the winter side that they serve no purpose.

On the plus side, the shorts are longer, and the underwear goes down the legs....this is good news for guys who are holding their battle buddies legs, although I think we will all continue to stare awkwardly at the ceiling so that we don't have to worry about un-seeing anything.

As far as the downside...well, the shirts are partially see-through. This means that women need to ensure that they have black sports bras and it's easy to tell who doesn't remove their dog tags in the PTs. The winter weight shirt, pants, *AND* jacket are all lighter than the preceding version. Why have a winter weight jacket/pant/shirt set if it's only going to issue you warmth if you are at 45 degrees or higher???

I don't care what color they are....I care about function. Don't give me somethin' where one of the twins hangs lower than the shorts.....and look at the arenas that ALL of our troops are serving in. "Winterweight PTs" that are only useful in Florida mean possible safety concerns for our boys and girls in Minnesota.

When I enlisted in 1987 (Ancient times LOL) CIF gave us the banana shorts and white tube socks with gold stripes. We wore out brown t-shirts and tennis shoes (not boots). My first unit at Ft. Reilly had us buy unit t-shirts for Fridays and organizational runs (my 1SG had us buy all kinds of things - so you could never have money to spend). I hated the shorts. When saw the draft uniform with gold shirt I was like WTF?

I do like it.
I've been retired a couple of years and still have my PFU. I like the black and gold and might get one one for when I get my fat retired ass off the couch LOL

So there are pros and cons to the New uniform. It's really lightweight, which I like. And the jacket won't constantly ride up like the old one, which was endlessly irritating. I like the way they look and they really are comfortable. However.... The white socks look ridiculous, they are insanely expensive, and (being black) will feel like we are roasting in the 7th circle of hell in The summer. Honestly, though, there are always going to be those people that complain about everything, and those followers that mindlessly agree. A good long run in the New PTs is a joy however. None of that restrictive feel, and they are moisture wicking. Pros far outweigh the cons. Ask us again next August when we're boiling.

Are they actually Yellow on Black?

I know I'm just a former Sgt from the Marines, but did anyone point out that people run in the #%^#^% dark, and a little bit of reflective coloring on a BLACK uniform is just asking to get ran over at 0600.

This looks like a huge Safety Standdown waiting to happen on every base in the country.

From what I read I like the new design I was not a fan of the want to be turtle neck on the long sleeve shirt. I liked the black and grey color scheme but black and yellow are fine too.

Likes: Color is good...less sweat showing. Light weight shirt is nice to a point....helps with breathing during the run. I like the longer "undies" so the dudes don't have to worry about accidentally catchin' a glimpse of "the twins" when holding feet for sit-ups. Also, the shorts are longer than the "daisy dukes".

Dislikes: They are built cheaply, shirt is semi-transparent too.....so does a womans bra show through requiring a black bra? Winter weight clothing is not much heavier than summer weight clothing. I liked the reflective V that the IPFU had.....why don't we have it on this? $160 for a full set is ridiculous...especially for that cheap of a thing.

I hate the fact that I have to come out of pocket for another expensive uniform when there was not much wrong with the current one I have. Lucky me, I'm out before the change over date. I voted that it didn't matter because at this point the new uniform is happening no matter if people like them or not.

I think more folks are concerned with having to buy a new uniform than whether or not it looks good. For me, black looks "cool"....until you are doiing PT at zero-dark-thirty and people have a hard time seeing you.....

This is just like the Beret, and everything else that changes... BLUF it does not matter what you you think or want, the Army decided we were going to a new PT uniform, and that is that. Personally I likes the black and grey, but Army colors are Black and Gold.

And... we still have PT belts...

I LOVE the new PT uniforms. The look, fit and practicality is so much better. I appreciate the softness of the jacket and pants, the moisture wicking shirt is a tremendous improvement on the old ones. I feel like stains won't be as much an issue as with the old shirts. Affordability was surprising. I purchased an entire issue set for $145.00. Really the only con to the look of the new PTs is the fact that the PT belt looks dumb in the winters. Shouldn't be much of an issue now with spring around the corner.

I've had the old grays, the IPFU and now the Apfu! I love them. They feel lighter and also have the material under armor is made of. They could be Warmer for places like here in Germany but thry are way better than the IPFU!

Since there is not other option I will have to clarify my response. I am not against changing the way the PT uniform looks. However, I live in an area where the temperature regularly gets up to 95+ degrees. Black is not necessarily friendly when living in a sunny area. And there are a lot of Army bases in hot areas. Even when conducting PT downrange the sun is brutal. I would've liked it more so if the new uniform would've been black on gold instead of the gold on black. On that note I am actually quite glad to see that the uniform is a moisture-wicking material, my current unit has been using this material for unit PT uniforms for years and I cannot say how much I enjoy it over the Army APFU.

The new uniform looks better, but the Army left put most of the things I thought would have really made the change worthwhile. The big thing is, we are still wearing PT belts because they didn't make these brighter and/or more reflective. Second, I was hoping for modern, moisture-wicking shirts and shorts. I don't have the APFU yet, but I understand the soldier will have to buy the better quality shirts and shorts.

Hey folks, those of us in the service for years had the opportunity to actually vote on the new PT uniform. This one was chosen and there it is. The material is the question, although I think we need to reach out and embrace some of our athletic companies, e.g. Nike, Puma, Adidas, Under Armour, to get their take and input on any action uniforms. While they have been known for "cutting edge" decisions based on movement, durability, etc, the services rely on who knows what to design a uniform. In the past we've been stuck with bad material and bad design. As long as the material and design is good, let's move on.

Embrace the suck. Eventually someone will realize we do PT in the dark, the new PTs are dark/black. So instead of standing out in the dark, someone decided for us to blend in and become speed bumps. Something tells me it's going to turn into a Monday and Friday safety briefing, maybe even a monthly PowerPoint brief on how to watch out for Soldiers in this new dark PT uniform while driving. Not to mention that dark colors in hot climates don't mix. Where was the medical field in this uniform color decision?

Started my career wearing the banana suit with reversible blue and yellow top. Improved to the cotton blend all gray with hooded sweat shirt that was a bit better. The soon-to-expire was a vast improvement over both with the exception of cost (the shorts and shirt should not cost what they do). The latest uniform incorporates modern material, costs a bit more, looks good, but not necessarily better and is needed to ensure Joe and Jane actually buy the new uniform made of the new materials. That is one reason for the big A on the back of the gray tee shirt. Beats boots and ewets.

I personally like the new look, however I would have preferred the yellow undershirts. It get hot and humid here in Campbell early in the mornings and the black shirt is going to make it miserable... I am procrastinating buying the new uniforms for now.

I think it was a waste of money. The real problem is the reflective belt. When I was at Ft. Riley (02-06), we didn't wear reflective belts for PT, the PT area was closed from traffic. Since when did we become an Army that cares how it looks when we are doing PT? We should be getting rid of the requirement by commands to have on the stupid reflective belt when we are not running on a road with traffic. We should work smarter not harder.

Me personally, I bought mine not too long ago and I like them so much better than the old ones. The only problem I have is they are a lot thinner than the old pt's, but I can get over that. The best part is it makes me feel like a ninja when I go to pt every day lol. But my question is I see a few of the soldiers in the Ecws wearing the black pt cap. Where is the guidance on that. It it authorized or not or are they waiting till the wear out dates to change the policies?

Aesthetics wise I think they're an improvement. I've also never found the current APFU to fit all that well, so hopefully that has improved as well. Being ARNG chances are it'll be the wear-out date or after before we see them.

I'm retired, so I'll put in 2 cents and see if I get any change.
Observation one, the majority of PT training I've seen is either before dawn, or late afternoon.
Two, dark colors are not good to wear in the dark, regardless of tiny strips of reflective material.
Three. Wearing dark colors in bright sunny afternoon PT is rather Unwise due to attracting heat, not letting the body dissipate it. Look for more heat related injuries.
When I had my Jeep Weangler, just switching from a black removable top to a lighter color tan it was 22 degrees cooler inside when the sun was out. Course most the time when the sun was out the top was down; something you can't do in the PT uniform..

Change is good unless your a soldier that has been in less then 6 months and have to foot the cost of it. I was caught in the last change and lucky to be given a couple weeks to get the new one. And being on a post where there are over 35,000 soldiers and a clothing and sales store that have an isle for pt uniforms that's about 10 ft for all pt gear

The look is okay....I get the whole black and gold theme. However, no logo (maybe even the large single star) on the back means and all black means the absolute necessity of the hated PT belt. The only improvements I wanted were just one REAL pocket to put my keys in and make the shorts a better fit. I got one of those and free unneccesary integrated underwear with a pocket I could hyptohetically conveniently hide small contraband in.

It is ironic that we see reflective (aka "PT") belts on these Soldiers. The new APFU specifically states that the Reflective Belt is NOT worn.

I have yet to buy/wear the new APFU, so I won't comment on it specifically, but many people I have talked to about it says that it is better than the IPFU.

So who's banking off of the sales of this uniform... These are cheaply made uniforms that cost $160 (PRICE?) Perhaps a politician again?

I'm so glad they decided on stark black uniforms since we all know the a$$holes driving their cars passing soldiers at 30 MPH blasting their boom boxes don't recognize the team/squad/platoon they are passing.

Looks like we're going to have to wear the good'ole handy dandy PT belt once again!

GET RID OF REFLECTIVE BELTS!!! The reflective PT Belt is not required by Army Regulation, but it is often included in base policy or unit SOP. Why? Monkey see, monkey do? That's the way we've always done it? Are there really that many Soldiers getting hit by vehicles during company PT? Most Navy and Marine bases only require reflective wear when running on the road in small groups during the hours of dusk or darkness. The Army wants a reflective belt regardless of time of day, type of exercise, location of exercise, size of the group exercising, and even if the underlying PT uniform is reflective. Brilliant! (Frickin' stupid!)

Changes like this suck. Some of us that have been in for a while constantly have to buy new versions of everything, while everyone else coming in gets them standard issue. I'm not completely sold on them. I went out and bought the Dress Blues before that cutoff date, but I can wait until the very end for this PT uniform.

If you ask me, it's all "foxed" up anyway. We're doing PRT but still taking the APFT. New APFT uniforms are scattered across the formation, mixed in with the older versions. And to think, the majority of the people who voted on the new APFT uniform picked it out like this.

Injecting government money into the textile market always drives uniform change decisions. I know that sounds cynical, but it is also accurate.

This uniform looks like USMA or USMA graduates made the decision here on the look. The PT uniform has been black and grey for over 25 years . . . The Army has a tragic history not paying attention to tradition when it comes to uniforms. The American public has become very familiar with this uniform . . . so the Army changes it. Possibly they were thinking it was a more slimming color? Make the uniform tighter, enforce height weight standards, and practice fat shaming at every level. I'm only being slightly sarcastic.

The new LOOK is great, but the quality/fit of the new uniforms leaves quite a bit to be desired. I'm also not particularly excited that they found a way to include more velcro. The fit of the shorts in particular is awful, unless you get the Soffe version.

When I was in basic, AIT, and my first two permanent duty stations, we wore our green work fatigues for PT. After that, the Army kept changing PT uniforms just often enough to recoup a healthy portion of our clothing allowance. I still don't understand why you have to wear something different than fatigues, BDU's or whatever they call them now just to perform PT. I can see why we changed from running long distances in boots, but not the rest of the uniform.

I personally liked teh old sweats best atleast the shirts. I miss my BDU's and black boots and I'm not a fan of the ASU's either. I liked having unit patches. Atleast then you could tell who was from where.

Hated the PT Belts, but understood the need for them in Germany where the local populace always seemed to drive right through the intersections as we ran through them ourselves.

At Oh Dark Thirty... it was a pair of bright flashlights with the PT cones that did the trick and all of the Company/ Battalion Road Guards carried them. Our Battalion runs were done with as many as twelve of us running rings around the unit as it did the 5-8 mile run.

The stock material of the new PT uniform is not a significant upgrade to justify the cost associated with the cost. A grey PT shirt identical to the new black one could have been offered as this seems to be the O lyrics significant material change and it's now optional and not issued with the new uniform. At over 10 million to change out uniforms this is a gross waste of money. The black pants are identical minus that stupid logo that cost more and prevents even the slightest monetary cost for both the army and soldiers that now have to completely change uniforms. Officers over the last 10 years have had to pay for 4 uniform changes to include this one without any compensation. A first year enlisted member that graduates basic training has grey puts that will have to be replaced the first year clothing allowance will not cover the cost of a single complete summer and winter PT set. This was unneeded and epidemic of the waste of taxpayers money and irresponsible leaders that don't do the math on how the cost are burdened on their junior officers and enlisted.

I don't mind the new PT uniform although I do find it's a little colder wearer it this winter versus the old one, the wind seems to go through the material a little easier making it chilly. I was hoping to have reflective material on the New PTs would make wearing a PT belt unnecessary but it seems we will continue to go the safe route and wear a reflective belt as well.

I didn't read all of the comments but we voted for this uniform. It's been a couple years but I don't remember many color choices. And most unit shirts I have bought or seen are black anyways. I know most units in Hawaii wear theirs 5 days a week and they can't keep this on the shelves at clothing and sales.

I think many individuals that don't want to embrace the change seems to stem from the same two reasons. The more important if the two reasons is cost, while many individuals coming in to the service will get these at initial issue, most will have to procure them with their own funds. And the second reason is that the seasoned individuals will see a surplus store in their home. As for my personal views, you are supposed to be an professional at all times a grand part of this is looking and acting the part. The Army wants uniformity and these new uniforms do that with our branch colors (sans the green) logo placement is on all portions of the new uniform to distinguish espre de corps. I am however against the fact that the yellow stripe (as of now) is not reflective) it may be bright but the should have taken from the last gen III uniforms to make it reflective as we still look fairly ridiculous wearing it during winter months, I understand that we have them for quick "on the spot changes" invade a commander decides to downgrade pending weather changes. As for cost I see many individuals forget that they recieve a yearly payment for uniforms (many use it for personal funds). They have given two years for individuals to acquire these uniforms, with the funding that is more than enough time if you use your funds appropriately. We must all remember the soldiers creed "I am an expert and a PROFESSIONAL." as well as for our NCOs "NO ONE is more PROFESSIONAL than I." We are professionals in the form of combat arms and need to look and more importantly always act the part at all times as well as give that example in our actions, look, and responsibilities to our new soldiers coming in.

My feelings on the new uniform are a bit contradictory. On one hand, I am excited about the new uniform for the improvements in material and functionality. However, at the same time the price and hassle of changing the uniform is a pain. Does one outweigh the other – at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter, this is our new PT uniform. We need to embrace it and move forward. I have enough old PT uniforms to stock a few shelves at clothing and sales, but over the next couple of months I plan on slowly acquiring a few new PT uniform sets. My only wish is to see the PT belt disappear! Hopefully future changes can address this and are small changes instead of a complete redesign.

I am happy I don't have to buy another uniform but I like the colors and from what I can tell, the uniform is more comfortable. In 30 years, I went from the banana suit to unit PTs to the gray PTs to the IPFU. Now I think they got it closer to right and I am retired.

I like them. They maintain their look even when wet. The wicking material dries very fast. The lighter material is cooler, despite color, even in 100* heat.

From an old guy, from before the time of an official PT uniform, anythings better than what we had way back. Every brigade or division had a PT uniform (sweats), and 82nd Abn. Div. had a pair of shorts the made my inner thighs bleed every time I was forced to wear them.
