This comes on the heels of reports that the active duty army is laying off 30,000 Soldiers in the next 17 months, and that recruiters will "need to get picky" in their recruits.<br /><br />Does this rub anyone else the wrong way? I have no problem with using military service as a path to citizenship. However, in the current situation, this seems like a slap in the face not only to those who have served with honor and integrity and will be forced out (or already have been), but also to those who will be passed over for service in the recruiting process.<br /><br />Illegals, after all, entered the country illegally. I am sure there are several potential recruits who will be passed over due to minor brushes with the law, or for tattoos or something similar. Their past behavior will be punished in that they will be denied service. Service that was once used as a means for someone to straighten up and make something out of themselves.<br /><br />I understand the argument that some illegals were brought over as children and basically had no clue what was happening. I get that. Still, This is not the time to implement something like this. One day, but not now.<br /><br />This is not debating the merits of allowing illegals to serve. I have no problem with that. They want to be citizens, they want to bleed with citizens on the battlefield, I commend them and am all for it. This has to do with allowing this as a recruiting tool during a time when we are forcing good men out by the flip of a coin.<br /><br />What say you?
