Going back to the 1960's when the Palestinian terrorist factions learned the wisdom of re-titling names of groups and reorganization of small units titled brigades or Army they have skillfully manipulated the media and public perception.
In some cases the groups have fought over faith such as the Shia vs Sunni group fighting. Usually the infighting [outside perspective not their own] was more a turf war similar to organized crime which they are similar to.
Al Qaeda and ISIL both subscribe to Wahhabi Islam and are rooted in the same beliefs. ISIL has tried to become a standing Army whereas Al Qaeda has operated more like our own Green Berets have done in inserting small groups for training, recruiting indoctrination, etc.Response by LTC Stephen F. made Jun 20 at 2015 10:19 AM2015-06-20T10:19:47-04:002015-06-20T10:19:47-04:00Sgt Terry W Drake759883

It is all about the territory and who has the biggest gun.Response by Sgt Terry W Drake made Jun 20 at 2015 2:09 PM2015-06-20T14:09:22-04:002015-06-20T14:09:22-04:00SGM Private RallyPoint Member1128661

I think you are overthinking the solidarity of terrorists. In 1993, Imad Mugniyah called for a meeting between Sunni and Shia terrorist groups. Basically the result was that they should quit fighting among eachother until the US and Israel were destroyed.

What you are seeing is more like the inter-gang warfare in Chicago in the 1920's. The Capo of each group wants everyone else's allegiance, and isn't getting it. There are also ideological issues. Al Qaida basically was less religious in its rhetoric, seeking an area they could call a country. ISIL, by their published doctrine which is based on Sharia, cannot agree to any boundaries, nor are they allowed to establish permanent peace treaties, and are required to be at war with someone every year, until the entire world is under the Caliphate. To do this, they are declaring Muslims who aren't members "taqfir", or infidels who can then be killed.

For years now, the Muslim world has complained about actions in the Middle East, saying they could solve the problems. Well now is their chance. They can take the lead against those who declare them "taqfir", or keep their mouths shut when we act in their place.Response by SGM Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 24 at 2015 8:05 AM2015-11-24T08:05:30-05:002015-11-24T08:05:30-05:002015-06-20T04:14:35-04:00
