Add the slaughter of WWI and the deaths by government (principally Soviet and Chinese Communist) and it's hard to imagine a time for brutal than the 20th Century. However, with the rise of radical Islam and the Left determined to repeat the misadventures of their 20th Century experiments in social engineering and the 21st may give it a run for the money
