There have been many a song penned by many a writer. I cannot listen to Our National Anthem without a silent tear escaping. I mostly listen to country, but "Silver Wings" has always been among my favorites, RIP Merle: you gave us all you had. Johnny Cash "This Ragged Flag" speaks for itself. Who hasn't heard "Green Berets" and been moved? Newer is David Ball's "Private Malone."There are plenty more but at the moment I have a bit of brain fog so I am asking you. Any decade, any genre. If you have a reason, include it. Some days I just want to get lost in the music. Music Heals.

This one is hard to listen to without breaking apart. Not sure why it has such an impact.

"How Great Thou Art, that saved a wretch, like me, I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see" are the most familiar words, but the next verses are worth the listen. And played by bagpipes is traditionally reserved for those who served.

To me, this one tears a person up as much as Taps if not more.

They did this at my uncles graveside funeral; they were also doing the 21 gun salute and I was balling my eyes out and trying to hold my salute.

SSG(P) Christopher Erickson - I grew up listening to SSG Barry Sadler over and over. In fact I still listen to him as I have the album on my iPhone. The Ballad of the Green Berets is what made me and my twin brother join the Army in 1969. Like SSG Sadler, we dropped out of HS in tenth grade and enlisted on our 17th birthday. We thought we'd go Airborne Green Beret all the way but being young and lacking any prior discipline those plans went out the window. Much respect SSG Erickson.

SSgt Dan Montague, at SF Phase 1 at Camp Mackall (APR-MAY70), the instructors made us come to attention and sing the Ballad of the Green Berets on the mornings that we started the day in a classroom setting! SSG Barry Sadler is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery, and I've been to his grave to pay my respects. SSG(P) Christopher Erickson SFC William Farrell Maj Kim Patterson

The "Fulfilled Desire" is classical but you would have to be a nerd or married to a nerd to know where the music comes from. All the music is from the video game Final Fantasy VII.

SFC William Farrell - Great piece of music. The story behind it is interesting as well. It was during WWII (1942) and I believe Aaron Copland was commissioned to write a patriotic piece to celebrate the war effort, but even though they asked him to use a title like "Fanfare for the Soldiers" or whatever obvious thing like that, he surprised everyone with what he chose to name it.

Patriotic military music from the heart that chokes me up...my favorites are "I drive your truck" by Lee Brice, "I’m Already There", Lonestar, and "Arlington" by Chase Adkins

I am a definite Merle Haggard fan and these are my favorites from him.
1.) Mama tried
2.) Are the good times really over
3.) I think I'll just stay here and drink
4.) And the classic, that's the way love goes.
I also heard the other day that Merle recorded over 400 other songs that were not ever released and they are looking to ease them into the mainstream over the next couple of years.

Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth - "I Drive Your Truck" I always crank , agree with your other choices, and how about Jamey Johnson "You Should Have Seen it In Color." And lest we forget, Lee Greenwood, "God Bless the USA"

"Going Home" played on the bagpipes! I've been to so many police funerals that I can't count, and when they play that tune on the bagpipes it gets me every time!

It's actually part of the Largo from the New World Symphony by Antonin Dvorak, but most of us know it as "Goin' Home"

Capt. Tom Brown, great song and around perhaps the longest but I have to go with the Airforce "Off we go, into the wild blue yonder..." And from the poem, "Oh, I have slipped the surley bonds of earth and touched the face of God."

My personal list after the Anthem:
1. The Army Goes Rolling Along (We're the oldest, so we go first)
2. Game Over by Lil Flip....once we mount up, it's GAME OVER for someone.
3. Lowrider...we'd rotate motivational songs and this was cool because we all have seen the scene in Gone in 60 Seconds when they're all there listening to it getting pumped up.
4. The Final Countdown....nuff said
5. Rollin by Limp Biscuit
6. Thunderstruck
7. Chase Rice..."Ready Let's Roll"
8. Baraka Flaka Flame....I'm the head of the MF'ing State.
9. FL GA Line....This is how we roll
10. Scorpions ...Rock you like a Hurricane
11. LL Cool J..."I'm Bad". 240 years of proving that.

These two songs are special and do not need to be played after the anthem:
Commodores "Jesus is Lord"
Be Be and Ce Ce Wayans "Close to you".
