Cool story bro! That's nice that the Pentagon can coddle your feelings and all but what does any of this have to do with the Air Force executing it's mission? What you have is a divergence between your physical and mental state which is by definition a mental condition. Reality divergent mental conditions used to bar individuals from service back when the focus was on the mission and not Mr. Silcox's confused feelings about gender identity. You do not have my support and the powers that be advocating and accepting of mental conditions such as yours as permissible within the fighting force are taking the military in the wrong direction. All of this is a distraction from putting bombs on target but here's your participation trophy for showing up and invoking change. Change in this context is the illusion of progress. I don't care about anyone's life choices, to each their own. My question is about the funding for this. Does the government pay for the operation? What about the hormones afterwards? What about all other expenses that I can't even begin to imagine? What about dorm situations? Will their be transgender dorms? I can't imagine all females wanting to be sweep mates with a prior male but you can't make them sleep with the males anymore because they are female. This will of course apply to females who decide to become males. I feel this will bring on a whole host of issues that will be a real challenge for a service that is struggling to fix even the smallest issues right now.

I have become very educated over the past several years on the myths and facts of transgender and other LGBT people in military service. I have worked with 2 transgender people in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and have been very impressed and enjoyed working with them. I have read of the outstanding service of transgender people in the Israeli Army (they are officially allowed to serve openly as with all other LBGT people) and more recently in our military which appears on the cusp of breaking down the last barrier of LBGT people serving openly. I congratulate you on your impressive military record and your pride in serving and pleased that you are being able to continue your Air Force career. You look very sharp in your uniform. I see some disheartening comments here as well as good ones. Here's my take on this:

Can this individual do their assigned duties? if the answer is yes, then their personal choices are theirs and as long as they are within regs, all is good. I see that as what's happening here. The Pentagon has decreed that SrA Silcox is authorized to be recognized in a certain way, but has no effect on the ability to perform. Thus, congrats SrA Silcox, keep doing your duties to the best of your abilities and keep your head up.

To the nay sayers and doubters, get a life. This has absolutely zero effect on you. If you don't like it, don't worry about it. You're not the one that will have to face the hatred out there. Try and be understanding though and supportive in getting the mission accomplished, otherwise, you're a freaking impediment to putting warheads on foreheads with your sour attitude.

I guess my only thought here, in regards to the negative respondents is, don't you realize that this is a public forum? Per AFI 36-2618: 3.1.2. NCOs carry out the orders of those appointed over them by virtue of the authority vested in their rank. This is done by effectively
employing personnel, material, equipment, and other resources under
their control. They represent the Air Force NCO Corps to all with whom they come in contact. Personal integrity, loyalty, leadership, dedication,and devotion to duty must remain above reproach. As an Air Force leader, manager, and supervisor, the NCO must uphold Air Force policies, traditions, and standards. The NCO should, by word and example, epitomize the Air Force as a profession and a way of life for the military and civilian communities.

Oi, if you can do the job effectively and wear the uniform right, I've got no complaints. Far as I am concerned, the moment you put that uniform on gender and orientation, etc. goes out the window. You're an Airman. An Airman with a job that you better do well. Do your thing.

Congrats. No offense intended, but why are you still a SrA after 7 years? As a reservist I see this all the time, some guy/girl has been in for 6,8,10 years and they are still a SPC.
