It appears that racism is in the eye of the beholder. If she says she sees it, then I'll just have to take her word for it. Me? I don't see it. I don't get her interpretation. If I were of a suspicious nature, I'd say she's merely looking for notoriety. But, I'm not like that. I'll just let her have her interpretation and let it go at that. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't budge the needle on my "Give-a-Damn" meter.

All "men" are created equal. Hum? It's not a convenient truth but the truth is women and minorities had to fight for their freedoms. The rich white land owners who wrote it were not looking to free a nation they were securing their interests and making sure they got to keep their $$$. Nothing's changed. Great Britan however abolished slavery 3 years earlier and gave women the vote ten years earlier...makes you wonder if woman and monorites would have been better off under British rule?

Rep Norton makes no allowance for the world in which the Founders lived or the society in which they were raised. For their time, the concepts in the Declaration were revolutionary. The "Divine Right of Kings" was still a theory of Government in the 1700s. People were divided by class and religion as well as race and gender. Note that not all of the signers of the Declaration were slave owners nor were they all farmers and land owners. Some were lawyers or merchants. Also, not all black people in the Colonies were slaves; freemen existed in many states practicing their trades or professions and raising families in relative freedom. Discrimination as we understand it today abounded in Colonial society and continues in many forms today; however, the Founders gave us ways to remedy discrimination under the law and we have done reasonably well in that regard. Rep Norton is an embarrassment and the voters of Louisiana should remedy that at the ballot box this fall.

All men were created equal...so you wanna say that people were not created equal because their rights at the time were not equal. The meaning of that line is so powerful. It is a declaration that you are equal and that you demand to be treated that way. If you don't want to be treated that way well cool. If you don't want to recite or read the Declaration of Independence...cool again. If you want to stomp on a flag cool because here is the deal. That paper gives you the rights and announces that you deserve those rights. That flag represents the country that says you have the very right to be an idiot. You are stomping on that very right that you are exercising. You are refusing to read the very thing that stated deserve the right not to have to.
