"I held off posting this so that you would have finished your morning coffee today in order to save those precious computer screens that you’re always complaining about being ruined.

A county veterans services officer (a fan) who helps veterans and their survivors navigate the complex federal and state benefits dropped this in our inbox last night. A fellow VSO from another county got the above DD214 from a recent widow who stopped by his office to inquire about any benefits her husband earned for her. So the VSOs scrubbed any Personally Identifying Information from it and sent it to us for instructional purposes.

The word “Classified” appears 11 times – nothing about a DD214 is classified. Ever. Classified information would not be included on the document. Classified, of course, is not a classification of classified information, anyway. His last duty station is listed as Haiphong – Haiphong was a North Vietnamese city, which is why the US Navy mined it’s harbor in 1972. His reenlistment code, RE-3R, means that he is ineligible for reenlistment without waivers. That part might be true.

The math in his service computation is really off. 1 year, 11 months and 12 days plus 0 years, 9 months and 41 days (whaa?) does not equal 4 years, 9 months and one day. Well, not using modern math, anyway.

Apparently, the closest civilian occupation to a Navy SEAL is a mechanic. His awards are a mess, but he has the much-sought-after National Defense Service Medal.

The schools and training are a hoot. I want to volunteer right now for Self Destruction School, in fact, I think I could pre-test out of it and get the badge – there’s a Self Destruction Badge, right?

After all of that, I’d hate to be the VSO who has to give the bad news to the widow, most of all, though, I sympathize with the widow whose last memory of her husband is that he was a forger and a liar. It’s demonstrative of why all of you phonies out there need to come clean now while you’re still alive and there’s time to make up for your lies to the people who love you."

This is one of those cases where I might just give the Widow an answer that he didn't earn any benefits that she could receive without going into details if possible.

Of course, the veteran might not be the forger and fake, it might be the widow....

I have several a very extensive schools list and in truth just the NCOES system is at a minimum 6 months and he was able to squeeze all that into a year or so...speechless

1) The individuals grade rate or rank box is "classified" however the next box shows his pay grade as E-4 shouldn't this have been classified as well?

2) We had people "serving" in North Vietnam, they were in POW camps, where was he?

3) Why is anything "classified" on a DD214 once let alone 12 times including the supposed form itself?

Surely this is a joke or as someone stated, an attempt to impress vs an actual act of stolen valor. If HE did not attempt to gain from it other than to impress another person, its just ridiculous and I truly feel for the poor guy who has to break it to the widow that it was a sham. I know my wife would want details if she were told I did not qualify with all this "junk" that looks impressive including the purple hearts indicating wounding in combat. Just give that a thought. How would yours react if they were under the impression you suffered wounds in combat and then do not qualify for some benefit you can research online and know, if the document was in fact legit you were entitled too.

She spent her life believing she was married to a hero (not everyone has the background to recognize a fake!) ... and went to ask for help for benefits she believed she had a right to, as any military veteran widow should have the right to do ...

So in all the comments about the jerk off who forged this sack of crap lies ... don't forget the true victim here .. his widow & family. Stolen Valor can & does HURT others! Don't know if he profited from his falsehoods, but it's evident that it has caused great harm to someone who loved & trusted him.

Some of the language is "civilian" jargon. I remember wanting to go to a school for hand to hand combat. I believe it was called the USD course, unarmed self defense (I never got to go). I don't remember any training course called "martial arts."

Maybe this was a joke dd214 meant to be over the top, just a silly thing and his real dd214 is packed away somewhere. maybe him and some buddies we're competing to see who could have the most ridiculous dd214. that's the optimistic side of me, the side that believes in my fellow veterans.

SO, something I just considered when this popped back up in my feed... This DD214 is so bad, it may have been intended that way, as in it was a joke all along, only the widow found it and wrongly assumed it was real.

I say that because if I was creating a joke DD214 to post with a Stolen valor response or Meme,,,,it would look much like the one posted here.......
Now my wife, a vet and with me most of my 28 year career would know it was fake, and well it would not be filed in my Mil docs... but still....
If the deceased spoke to his widow and held up that DD214 as real, then all guess of mine are off of course..

I was on active duty in the Navy for 26 years and served almost 20 more years as a DON Government Service (GS) employee. A significant part of most of my assignments on active duty and jobs as a civilian was to prepare, review and sign DD 214s. I have never seen a DD 214 that was classified including those of SEALS.

This is a legitimate DD 214 with numerous alterations made to it.
The biggest and most glaring issue here for you casual observers, speaking as someone who scrutinizes several dozen DD 214s a day, is the multiple different typefaces used on the form. Dead giveaway that it is fraudulent.
Comedy with the Self-destruction school, BTW.
That reenlistment code strongly suggests that the Sailor in question was reduced. It is a grade restriction that precludes reenlistment without a waiver.
I invite any of you to find me a Navy Seal that got out as an E-4 with an Honorable Discharge. Go ahead. I will wait.

First of all NO DD Form 214 is going to be Classified, 2nd classified is one of the following; Confidential , Secret and Top Secret, there isn't and never has been a Classified as a level of classified. I'm a VSO and have seen a couple of dubious dd-214's but never one as bad as this one. Had one guy claim Navy Cross, 2 silver stars, eight purple hearts and lots of other stuff. Also claimed to be a medically retired Marine captain when the highest rank he held was E5. He ended up being charged with wearing unauthorized decorations and VA fraud. Couldn't charge him with Stolen Valor because the law changed.
