Ransomware can come in several forms. One that affected me was when my nephew was living with me, he got a little careless with his web browsing activities on the laptop I let him use and got a program that locked the computer down and had a screen that claimed it found kiddie porn on the computer and would report it to the FBI if you didn't pay a "fine". it even used the laptop's camera, showing your face and said it would send it to the FBI.

I just sanitized the hard drive and put Ubuntu on that laptop.

Another form of ransomware would be hackers gaining access to a company's storage, putting full disk encryption on some or all of it's hard drives, then demanding payment for the encryption key.

I am careful and aware of what I download. All people should be. Ransom ware is a way your personal info is held hostage for money. If you don't know the source of something, don't download it

Unfortunately, this one is not a question of downloading anything. Hacker gains entry to a Computer via a vulnerability, encrypts the data files and then demands a ransom to unlock your own files. They do this through a variety of attacks, Watering Hole, Phishing & Trojanized update patches. We have seen LEO communities pay off ransomware attacks 3 & 4 times.

LTJG Robert M. - There have also been cases where a malicious file has been downloaded. Regardless people need to secure their important data

MAJ (Join to see) - Not specifically yet, but will be. As said, you can get it from an infected web-site, I have yet seen where payment actually helped.
